Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill may extend his search to the Spanish Primera Division for a new defender.

The player that O’Neill has been monitoring is left back Roberto Canella from Sporting de Gijon.

The twenty-year-old Canella is a fast and attacking left back, He is rapidly moving up the international ladder.

He first represented Spain’s Under 19 side during the 2006/7 season before moving to the Under 21 side during the 2007/8 season.

Canella represented Spain at the Under Twenty FIFA World Cup in the 2007/8 season.

The Spanish press rate Canella as one of the best young defending prospects in Spain.
