Lucky United still on course for five trophies: Ferguson

AFP - 7 January 2009 23:10

Manchester United´s Argentinian forward Carlos Tévez waits for a corner during the League cup semi final first leg football matchagainst Derby County at Pride Park, Derby, central England. Derby won 1-0.

DERBY, England (AFP) - Alex Ferguson said Manchester United were lucky to still be on course for five trophies this season after their shock 1-0 League Cup semi-final, first leg defeat against Derby County.

The Manchester United manager was punished by the side languishing 18th in the Championship for fielding a vastly-weakened side, with only Serbian Nemanja Vidic and Paul Scholes beginning the game decided by Kris Commons' wonderful 30th minute goal.

Ferguson clearly had one eye on Sunday's crucial Premier League meeting with rivals Chelsea at Old Trafford and that was part of his team thinking but even the 60th minute double substitution of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney could not prevent overwhelming favourites United from slipping to their fourth defeat of the season against the side that was relegated from the Premier League eight months ago with 11 points, the worst total ever recorded.

Such was the depressing nature of United's lethargic performance, Ferguson cannot wait for the return leg on January 20th and is delighted to still be in with a chance of claiming a place in the final on Sunday, March 1.

"Only losing 1-0 was a fantastic result for us. Considering the performance. We could have lost four goals. It's a fantastic result for us now and going to Old Trafford now it will be different," said Ferguson.

"We just did not play well and over-worried about their crossing and set pieces and we were panicky at the back."

Despite the heavy workload ahead for his side, Ferguson insists he will not be recalling all his big-name players for the second leg and refused to criticise youngsters like Darron Gibson and Danny Wellbeck, who will be given another chance to make amends.

"I think we will persevere with the younger players. I thought they were our better performers. We were lucky only to lose 1-0 and in a semi-final you need that bit of luck.

"Gibson was one of our better performers and Wellbeck did not get the service in the game so it is unfair to judge him," added Ferguson.

Clough will not even formally meet his new squad until Thursday after agreeing to take charge of the club that his father served with such distinction for six years and won the old First Division title in 1972, but he clearly has a touch of the Brian Clough magic.

Ferguson was quick to privately congratulate his opponents and shared a glass of wine with Clough junior after the game, who merely popped his head around the door of the home dressing room prior to kick off.

He will start work along side his assistant and former Nottingham Forest team mate Gary Crosby, preparing for Saturday's trip to face Cardiff City.

Youth team coach David Lowe, who was promoted to take the side, while Clough watched alongside chairman Adam Pearson in the directors box.

Reaching the semi-final stage cost Commons almost 1,000 in purchasing tickets for his friends, but the fulminating 25-yard shot he guided beyond United's Polish keeper after 30 minutes was pure gold dust for David Lowe, elevated from youth team coach to temporary Derby manager for the evening said: "Sir Alex congratulated all of us and he stayed for a drink, but Nigel was doing the entertaining."

The last time Clough took a side to Old Trafford the temerity of his non-league Burton Albion side forcing a 0-0 draw in the third round of the FA Cup was punished with five-goal humiliation, but that is where he wants to compete regularly after accepting the challenge of managing the side where his father won the old First Division title in 1972 en route to iconic status.

What his dad, who died in 2004 from stomach cancer, would have made of it all was a question Clough was expecting: "I haven't got the foggiest to be honest. I just wish he was still around to give me some advice," said Clough.

ITalksense, we were waiting for you, the Messiah, to teach us something about soccer. On a more serious note, if human behavior has not changed dramatically in the last 50 years, I can say that fans today behave the same way they always have. They boast when their team wins and grieve when their team loses. What is there to understand about soccer? Would you like every fan to be a tactician like you so that you can call the few of us imbeciles? As far as switching to the other wed site, I for one will decline the offer. I already have my hands full here at Soccerway. Besides, to me . . . . . is the same as a swear word. I never told you this but I’ve lost my hearing!

I just can't take YOU seriously Tonto.Forgive me for my ignorance - if you indeed have lost your hearing. But I honestly believe that YOU are more of a 'man of the world' than you let on, and could be the biggest wind-up merchant EVER!!!

This was unexpected, to be sure, but all United needs to do is win by more than 1 goal at home. They can do that.

DERBY, coached or managed by the son of one of the greatest all time coaches Brian Clough who coached the Rams to success in the early '70s and then later, Nottingham Forest one Europe 2 times straight with Clough.

This is what is important, the story itself; and soccerway was the first place I saw it. worldsoccer.com , teamtalk , there are many good sites to read, bigsoccer is another one.

KEEP IT UP DERBY COUNTY RAMS!!!! WHAT A GREAT SURPRISE!!! GOOD THINGS HAPPEN SOMETIMES!!! (nothing against United, good to see the big boys get beat).

There are a few amongst us that practice comedy and there are some of us who can genuinly say there sense of humour is quick. witty and effective. Moreover many of us believe we are intellegent enough to make some good meaningful comments which produce intellegent justified and intellegent responses. We all have our own opinions and favourite/disliked teams and players. Perhaps there are others who are have more brains than there writing seems to indicate but it is true some of us beleive there some on this site appear to show not much sense. Could ITalkSense lead those "gifted" amongst us to the promised website for true genuine intellegent followers of this sport ?

This was a fine performance against a poor United side . Derby were the underdogs and came out on top. They deserved their win and the goal they scored was brilliant. T o all the United knockers out there........remember this was only the first leg; and secondly, teams don't get to semi finals in these competions unless they have showed exceptional skills. Derby did well to get there so a walkover was not expected.

ITalksense, I admire your sense of perception! Yes, I’m a man of the world more so than I’m letting on. Nevertheless, can you recall one of my comments in which I featured a swear word? If I were to take everything seriously, I would be dead within a year from now. To use a platitudinal axiom, life is too short to worry about things. As far as my soccer comments are concerned, I can only say that after everything is said and done, usually more is said than done. It’s just a game and I enjoy it by lightning it with a bit of humor!

I was just checking out, we can check out any nations qualifiers for the world cup; you can check out about any league in any country. I've been to other sites, but this one is keen with the tables and all that, I'm not gambling so I don't really look at the charts but I'm sure people here have read the way, maybe one can even check out teams way out in Singapore, Fiji, I don't know, I know they are up to date on European nations and others.
