Defending Argentinian champions Velez Sarsfield began their 2009 Apertura campaign with a 0-1 win, while Buenos Aires giants Boca Juniors and River Plate both dropped points.
Velez played their opener at Colon, and the match appeared to be heading for a goalless result until Jonathan Cristaldo finally broke the deadlock with seven minutes left to play.
Boca struggled in the first half against Argentinos Juniors, for whom Gabriel Hauche scored the opening goal after 30 minutes. Nicolas Gianni even made it 0-2 just before the break, but Boca recovered in the opening minutes of the second half.
Guillermo Marino pulled one back in the 47th minute, and went on to net the equaliser four minutes later.
River Plate couldn't have a more disastrous start, losing 2-0 at Banfield. Santiago Silva put the hosts in the lead after just two minutes, followed by a second goal from Sebastian Fernandez in minute 32.
