Lazio win Italian Supercoppa

Lazio beat Inter 2-1 to win the 2009 Supercoppa

Lazio Roma have won the Italian Supercoppa for the third time in history, beating champions Internazionale 2-1 in Beijing.

The event took place far away from the teams' home country. This year, the Chinese capital city was chosen to host the match. On previous occasions, Washington DC, Tripoli and New York also offered venues for the Supercoppa.

Inter attacked from the start and actually were the team that most deserved the victory.

But it wasn't meant to be as Matuzalem put Lazio ahead in the 63rd minute and Rocchi made it 2-0 three minutes later.

Samuel Eto'o scored his first official goal for Inter in the 78th minute but it was to no avail as Jose Mourinho's side failed to get a second goal. Milito thought to have scored a late equaliser but his effort was correctly disallowed for off-side.

Lazio won the trophy before in 1998 and 2000, beating Juventus and Inter respectively.

This is so cool, Rocchi said yesterday that he'd like to see Inter punished today, and I guess he really put his money were his mouth is!

Jonathan Roorda, I know Inter played better but this is not how you write an objective article:

"Inter attacked from the start and actually were the team that most deserved the victory."

You should say "Inter had more chances" instead, something like that...again I'm not a journalist and I happen to agree with you that they played better but that's not something you put in an article like this!

No offense!

I don't know who deserved the victory the most, but in the end, the team that scored the most won. It is true. Inter were much better and created so many chances. They were very unlucky quite a few times. Julio Cruz must be happy. He made the right decision moving to Lazio and raised the cup with his new team after leaving Inter. But this defeat doesn't bother me at all. I hope it doesn't bother Eto'o either.

I was very happy with the way the team played. Now Mourinho has a lot more ways he can utilize the players. The team is more balanced. In the past, Inter used to throw long balls at Ibrahimovic up front and hope he scored. And we won games like that.

Today we didn't win, not because we played poorly, but because we were a bit unlucky and because 40% of our team is new players now, including Milito, Eto'o, Thiago Motta, Lucio, and the returning Suazo.. I was very happy with the way they all played, although Thiago Motta didn't please me as much. Eto'o played the best along with Lucio. I was really pleased with Eto'o insertion in the group, and let's remember he's just come back from a long vacation so he's not 100% in shape yet in the new team. Even Suazo performed his role well and aided in the first goal and was very dangerous on the right.

At one point, Mourinho was using a 4-2-4 formation, LOL! The third sub that the article did not mention was that of Viera for Stankovic. Viera and Cambiasso were the only 2 central defensive midfielders. Then we had 4 people up front including from left to right: Balotelli, Eto'o, Milito, and Suazo. Milito scored a goal, but it was disallowed for some reason I still don't understand.

Overall we have much more quality now and we have more options. Now other teams have to worry about 2 or 3 attackers up front and not just defend Ibrahimovic, who when shut down effectively, the whole team failed. Lazio deserved to win because they scored more goals. But the first goal was very lucky because Matuzalem got hit in the face and it bounced inside goal. And the second goal was an effective counterattack because Lazio was defending the whole time and Inter put too many people up front. But even with so many people up front, Inter created a LOT of chances. So I'm very exciting about the upcoming season, when the players will know each other well and when they play against teams that won't want to only defend. In Lazio's defense though, they were playing without Ledesma, Pandev, and De Silvestri who are all essential starters. Lotito left them out to punish them for being Prima Donnas and mercenaries. And I have a feeling they must have been pretty disappointed not to have been in Beijing lifting that cup! Hahah.

Forza Inter! Champions for 2009-2010! We are still the team to beat in Italy.

A great win for Lazio.

And at the same time, I think that Inter can look forward to being competitive in Serie A and in CL.

Good comment chandman. This again proves that people like Roorda and alboi have no clue about the greatest game on earth. They automatically think the team that has most possession and create the most chances deserves to win a game. How fuckin boring would football be if this was the case?

Please get this rammed into your stupid heads.........."THE TEAM THAT SCORES THE MOST GOALS IN ANY GAME DESERVES TO WIN THAT GAME"

That is the object of the game.

Clowns like newty and Sir Alex RedNose are the same when United batter a team but don't score as much. But ask newty and RedNose who "deserved" to win the Champions League final in 99?

Ask a Liverpool fan who "deserved" to win the Champions League final in 05?

I think everyone saw this game differently , Inter did control the possession but you have to mention that they didn't create any real chances. Lazio scored from a free kick and a superb goal from Rocchi who lobbed perfectly Cesar and the only goal Inter scored was from a "stolen" ball by Balotelli who went to take it from Dabo and gave it to Samuel to score , pretty not a good action to me . If I compare this game to the last one 2-3 months ago when Inter stunned Lazio with superb goals from Ibrahimovic and Muntari , this Inter-Lazion version has nothing to do with that one . People have to realize that Inter wont be the same without Ibra and Milan will be the team to beat when Huntelaar who is 10 years younger than Inzagui will start playing .

All the commentators I've been reading and Mourinho expressed that this is a better Inter. Mourinho's exact words,as I translate them from Italian to English, were:

"To my players I said only one thing: we have the team. Without hypocrisy, a team that played and another team that won. Without hypocrisy, a team that created 14 chances for goal and another team that won with luck and 3 total shots on goal. If Lazio continues to have this same luck it can play for the scudetto too...This can be football, but I am pleased, I don't remember an Inter with this much quality of play in the past year."

He later added:

Lazio has the joy of the win, we have the tranquility of having a team and a future. I am very satisfied with the test of my players, of a new game style that is being born, but obviously I can't be happy about the result, even more because everyone saw: this could have finished in a different way, like 3-1 for us.

One thing I know is that Mourinho doesn't hesitate to say what's on his mind...ever. When Inter had yet to buy Eto'o and Lucio, he said that "this isn't the Inter I was dreaming of". Every Italian journalist hates him because he says it like it is. Well, he said it like it was again this time. At least the guy is honest.

The players agreed, including Zanetti, Stankovic, and Maicon who all said that the team that didn't deserve to win, won and that they would have rather played like Lazio and won, than played beautifully and lost. But this is football. When we had Ibrahimovic, all of Serie A accused Inter of playing ugly football, of defending and then passing long shots to Ibrahimovic from defense hoping that he could score. The guy was so good that he actually did score a lot of the time. But now Inter is better. We have a more attacking style and more options. If we can offload the extra 5 players that don't fit into Mourinho's plans and buy an attacking midfielder, the team will be complete. Everyone at Inter is working hard to make that happen. And one loss of bad luck in pre-season will surely not discourage this new team. I congratulate Lazio for their win, but the truth of the matter is that they were the inferior team on the pitch that day and any "objective" person will say that.

Of course, everyone who dislikes me and by some strange extension of hate also dislikes Inter, will say otherwise. I know what I saw yesterday and compared it with Inter's game last season, of which I saw most of them. People are already willing to make predictions about the Serie A, but they say it is too soon to make predictions when their team loses. That's ok.

There are only two other teams that seriously dispute the scudetto next season. They are Juventus and Milan, in the same way that there are 3 teams in England and 2 teams in Spain that everyone thinks can win next season. Of the two other teams in Italy, Milan is the team I am least worried about. No disrespect to them, but I saw their game against Benfica (D, 1-1), Boca (L, to Penalty shots after 1-1), Bayern Munich (L, 4-1), INTER MILAN (L, 2-0), Chelsea (L, 2-1) and I would laugh to compare them to an Inter that is 40% new and has yet to have an opportunity to seriously train with each other. And we're still in transition as we wait for another player to arrive, an attacking midfielder who will give us more options.

The team I fear most from the two is Juventus, who by the way lost handsomely to Villareal the other day. But they have strengthened with Deigo and Melo. But I refuse to make predictions on the upcoming season. I'm simply stating facts and everyone, including Juventus and Milan who say that Inter are still the team to beat and including the bookmakers who give Inter the biggest chance of winning the Scudetto next season say the same thing. Inter are the best in Italy at this moment, whether you like it or not, whether you like me or not.
