Inter suffer Italian Cup KO

AFP - 23 April 2009 23:10

Inter Milan´s Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic reacts after missing a goal against Sampdoria during their Italian Cup semi-final second-leg match at San Siro Stadium in Milan. Inter won the match 1-0 but failed to overturn a 3-0 deficit from their first meeting.

ROME (AFP) - Serie A leaders Inter Milan were knocked out of the Italian Cup on Thursday when a 1-0 semi-final second leg win over Sampdoria fell short of overturning a 3-0 deficit from the teams' first meeting.

In the May 13 final in Rome, Sampdoria will face Lazio who completed a 4-2 aggregate win over Juventus on Wednesday.

It will be Sampdoria's first cup final appearance since 1994 where they defeated Ancona while, for Inter, defeat meant their run of four successive final spots came to an end.

Inter were champions in 2005 and 2006 and runners-up in 2007 and 2008.

With three goals to make up, Inter coach Jose Mourinho played three strikers with Mario Balotelli, Julio Cruz and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all starting.

It was Ibrahimovic who was to score the only goal of the second leg with a superb 27th-minute volley although the Swedish international was unfortunate not have celebrated a second when he saw a 37th-minute lob come back off the post.

Sampdoria had their chances with Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini both denied by good saves from Julio Cesar.

Inter can now turn their attentions to clinching the league title.

They have a 10-point lead with just six games left to play.

Great Game!

Inter had many chances. Ibrahimovic alone had 3 really good ones, of which one turned into a divine goal.

In the end the deficit was too large for Inter and Sampdoria deservedly won. Maicon's absence is clearly felt at Inter. Santon is good on the right flank. He's just starting to get the hang of it, but cannot compare with the penetrations that powerful and speedy Maicon is able to make - many of which turn into goals.

I think it was a mistake to play Cruz. Mourinho was using a 3-4-3 formation with only 3 defenders. But he then used defenders Maxwell, Santon, and defensive midfielders Viera and Zanetti in the center. I think he could have gone with a 3-5-2 and replaced Cruz with Stankovic.

Good game overall for Balotelli, who I am slowly starting to like. But inter definitely need a new attacking midfielder. I would like to see Bremen's Diego at Inter. And if Inter do want to buy a new attacker I would suggest someone younger with the potential to grow into the team. I don't have anyone particular in mind but I like Bojan Krkic.

Alboi, good report on the game! Am I correct in assuming that you’re an Interista? I dislike Inter but I like Balotelli. I think he will soon make a fine addition to the Italian national team. God knows we need goal scorers. I’m also anxiously waiting for Petrucci and Macheda, 2 youngsters playing with Manchester United, to play for us. I’m not sure if all three will be ready for South Africa but I know they will be in the Italian line up 5 years from now.

Balotelli may make some internationals and he is still quite young but I don't think he will be selected for 2010's competition or World cup, maybe the Euro 2012.

Tontodonati,

Pazza Inter Amala! Certo che sono Interista! Vai NeroAzzurri.

I was just reading the news on another site and it looks like Tevez is going to leave ManU at the end of the season. Let's hope Inter goes for it. But probably he is too expensive. On the other hand, there's also Aguero who has close ties with Maradona. Maradona wants him at Inter, but Aguero says he is enjoy his stay at Atletico... And then there's Villa. Can you imagine? Ibrahimovic and Villa on the same team? Add an attacking midfielder and I would cry! lol, maybe not. Inter is looking at Eto'o, but I think those are just rumors. Besides Eto'o is doing well this year in Barcelona and they would have to be crazy to let La Liga's top scorer go. I hope Inter spend a little this summer. We need to start looking towards the CL, cuz Ibrahimovic isn't happy. And if Ibra's not happy, I'm not happy! Also Julio Cesar wants it. And if JC wants it, I want it. Lol...

Qual'e la tua scuadra del cuore, Tontodonati?

Alboi,

Questa Inter e' veramente pazza. Sono anch'io Interista, pero' mi piace tanto anche il Milan.

Well, to get back to English, a 3-0 deficit was just too difficult to overturn. But admittedly Samp did well and they deserve to play Lazio in the final.

Sometimes the most important thing is to have a little bit of luck on your side. Inter didn't.

The other thing that confuses me with Inter; why to hell Ibrahimovic plays everywhere around the box in order to support second class forwards (Cruiz, Crespo)?

Alboi, la squadra del mio cuore e' il Milan, pero' amo anche la Roma e la Fiorentina. My favorite coach is Fabio Capello. My favorite players are Grosso, Buffon, De Rossi, Balotelli and Amauri

I hope BesTalent Scout doesn't read this. Otherwise, he will pester me with his Romanista's ideas.

It's unfortunate that here in USA I don't get to watch too many games but Soccerway does a pretty good job in keeping me updated.

RGPII1,

Thank you for your highly educated input. What is RGPII1 anyway, an air conditioner model number?

Tontodonati,

You can watch live games at www.atdhe.net

It's a pretty reliable website. I can't watch too many games on tv either. Thankfully, there's the internet.
