PRAGUE (AFP) - Czech manager Karel Bruckner on Wednesday sprung two surprises as he named his 23-strong squad to take part in June's Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland.
One notable omission to the Czech squad is former captain and Juventus midfield star Pavel Nedved, whose comeback for the tournament had been the subject of speculation. However, the Czechs - who face Switzerland in their opening match on June 7 - include a surprise call-up in striker Vaclav Sverkos of Czech side Banik Ostrava. Squad Goalkeepers: Petr Cech (Chelsea/ENG), Jaromir Blazek (Nuremberg/GER), Daniel Zitka (Anderlecht/BEL) Defenders: Zdenek Grygera (Juventus/ITA), Marek Jankulovski (AC Milan/ITA), Michal Kadlec (Sparta Prague), Radoslav Kovac (Spartak Moscow/RUS), Zdenek Pospech (FC Copenhagen/DEN), David Rozehnal (Lazio Rome/ITA), Tomas Sivok (Sparta Prague/CZE), Tomas Ujfalusi (Fiorentina/ITA) Midfielders: Tomas Galasek (Nuremberg/GER), David Jarolim (Hamburg/GER), Marek Matejovsky (Reading/ENG), Jaroslav Plasil (Osasuna/ESP), Jan Polak (Anderlecht/BEL), Daniel Pudil (Slavia Prague), Libor Sionko (FC Copenhagen/DEN), Stanislav Vlcek (Anderlecht/BEL) Strikers: Milan Baros (Portsmouth/ENG), Jan Koller (Nuremberg/GER), Martin Fenin (Frankfurt/GER), Vaclav Sverkos (Banik Ostrava) |
