CLAIREFONTAINE, France (AFP) - The international career of France's Nicolas Anelka reaches a watershed on Wednesday with another friendly match against England almost a decade after he scored twice at Wembley in a previous friendly.
The Chelsea striker, a hero of that victory over England in 1999, said that while he was expecting a difficult and tense match at the Stade de France. When asked if he had spoken with Chelsea team-mates who are playing for England, such as defender John Terry, Anelka said: "We haven't really talked much. The fact there were Manchester versus Liverpool, and Chelsea against Arsenal matches on Sunday meant we were not thinking of the match. "But it should be a great friendly match which will be tense and difficult. We know the English game very well and it will be a physical match." And on his two goals at Wembley, Anelka added: "I scored two goals but I didn't have a great game apart from that which I said at the time and I have played much better matches than that. "But after 10 years, despite all that has happened in my life, I have been a regular feature since I am still playing for France. I have made errors but that is part of life and I have no regrets." Anelka, though, rejected the assertion that Euro 2008 was foremost in his mind, protesting that his club football took precedence for the moment. "Yes I think about Euro 2008 a bit but there are huge matches coming up for Chelsea," said the former Arsenal and Real Madrid striker. "It is imperative to give priority to your club and do your utmost for them. "When the season is over, then the Euro will be upon us. "But there are so many important matches coming up that for the moment we are 100percent with our clubs." |
