DERBY, England (AFP) - Rock-bottom Premiership club Derby County on Friday finalised the two million pound (2.671 million euro) signing of Argentinian striker Emanuel Villa.
The 25-year-old, who has signed from Mexican side UAG Tecos, put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year contract. Rams boss Paul Jewell, who earlier in the day signed veteran Manchester City right-back Danny Mills on loan until the end of the season, said he was confident Villa will make an impact in the top flight. "This is a very exciting capture for us," Jewell told the club's official website. "I believe Emanuel is a striker of the highest quality. "He's a player I've known about for a long time and someone I was very keen to bring here. "I've seen him play myself and his reputation in South America is very high. "He's quick, good in the air, strong, and physical and has a good record in front of goal. "I think he's a player the Derby fans will quickly take to. His attributes give me no doubt that he'll adapt to the English game quickly." Villa, who will be introduced to Rams supporters at Sunday's FA Cup third round tie with Sheffield Wednesday, is waiting for international clearance before he can make his debut. Mills, 30, recently returned to City after a loan spell at Charlton and Jewell has moved quickly to take the former England international to Pride Park. Jewell said: "Danny has been playing at the highest level for a long time now, including a World Cup for England, so nothing will faze him. He is a hardened battler and will be great in the dressing room. "With the injury problems we have at the moment Danny's versatility is also a big asset; he can play right back or left back." |
