WARSAW (AFP) - Poland's players could strike it rich if they make it to the final of Euro 2008 in the country's first ever European championships appearance, the head of the national football association announced on Wednesday.
The 23-strong squad will share a jackpot of three million euros (4.75 million dollars) if they clear all the hurdles to the June 29 final in Vienna, Michal Listkiewicz, the boss of the Polish Football Association (PZPN), told reporters. If they get that far in the tournament, hosted by Austria and Switzerland, but lose the final they will split 1.8 million euros. In addition, they will already have built a healthy nest egg along the way. They are to share 1.2 million euros for making it to the semifinals, 800,000 euros for a quarter-finals slot, plus 400,000 euros for each group stage win and 200,000 euros per draw. Poland, who have been drawn in Group B of the 16-nation tournament, are set to face a tough task. The play Germany in their opening game on June 8, then co-hosts Austria on June 12 and Croatia on June 16. Despite solid qualifying runs, the Poles failed to shine in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, and recent sloppy friendly performances have caused jitters ahead of Euro 2008. However, even if they put on a similarly lacklustre display as their predecessors, the Euro 2008 players can still expect to come home better off: each man in the 23-member squad will receive 10,000 euros simply for going to the championships, plus 15,000 euros per match played. The sums are astronomical compared with the average monthly salary in Poland, which is around 700 euros. |
