Ronaldinho fires Milan to derby victory

AFP - 28 September 2008 19:10

AS Roma´s John Arne Riise shoots against Atalanta during a Serie A football match at the Olympics Stadium in Rome. AS Roma coasted to a 2-0 home success over Atalanta.

ROME (AFP) - Ronaldinho scored his first goal in Italian football to give AC Milan a vital 1-0 victory over Inter Milan in a pulsating city derby at the San Siro on Sunday.

Inter Milan had two players sent off -- although Marco Materazzi was dismissed after he'd been substituted -- as Jose Mourinho tasted defeat as Inter coach for the first time.

It means that despite losing their first two matches, Milan are right back up in the thick of the title race having won their next three in a row.

Ronaldinho dedicated his goal to the Milan fans and club president -- and Italy prime minister -- Silvio Berlusconi, who celebrates his 72nd birthday on Monday.

"I'm very happy, I was hoping to score a goal. This one is for the fans who've made me feel at home," said the Brazilian.

"It's a moment of great happiness, I know tomorrow is president Berlusconi's birthday, this goal is for him."

Previous leaders Inter drop down to fourth with the loss as the Serie A table takes on an unfamiliar look.

Lazio are the new Serie A leaders after they won 3-1 at Torino while Napoli, one of only two remaining unbeaten teams, are up to an unlikely second following their 1-0 success at Bologna.

Udinese are third having won 2-1 at home to Siena while Catania, who beat Chievo 1-0, are fifth ahead of Milan and Juventus.

In Milan Inter had more of the ball but Milan were looking dangerous on the break and on 25 minutes Kaka beat Maicon down the left before crossing for Ronaldinho, whose left foot shot was blocked by goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

Milan went in front on 36 minutes on the counter as Ronaldinho fed Kaka wide on the right before charging into the penalty area to meet his countryman's cross with a bullet header into top corner from almost on the penalty spot.

Mourinho waited less than a quarter of an hour after the break before deciding he'd seen enough and he threw on two strikers.

Brazilian Adriano and Argentine Julio Cruz came on for centre-back Materazzi and winger Alessandro Mancini in a typical Mourinho substitution.

Inter's task was made tougher when Nicolas Burdisso was sent off with a quarter of an hour left after picking up a second yellow card.

Mourinho brought on Dejan Stankovic with his final throw of the dice and he forced Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati into parrying a vicious volley before Adriano blasted the follow-up over the bar.

In a thrilling finale, Materazzi was shown a red card for berating the referee from the sideline and Milan substitute Andrei Shevchenko forced Julio Cesar into a fine save before Adriano headed wide from inside the six-yard box.

Mourinho refused to comment on the referee and defended his attacking substitutions.

"I don't think either side deserved to win more than the other, they scored a goal so well done Milan," he said. "I'm not talking about the referee, I want to be on the bench for the next game.

"I'm not afraid, when I'm not happy with the result I take risks. Unfortunately with 10 men I can't make more attacking changes."

Lazio have been the surprise team of this season and their fourth victory in five matches ensured their place at the top.

Macedonia forward Goran Pandev and a brace from scudetto top scorer Mauro Zarate, one from the spot, put them 3-0 up before nine-man Torino scored an injury time consolation goal from a Nicolas Amoruso penalty.

Lazio coach Delio Rossi said there was still more to come from his table-toppers.

"I'm happy to be the coach of players who give their all and play to their best," he said.

"It seemed easy today but Torino played well. I thought in the first half they played better than us but for the rest of the game it was all Lazio.

"We have worked hard and this group can develop and improve as we're missing important players like (Tommaso) Rocchi and (Francesco) Matuzalem."

In the capital, last season's runners-up AS Roma won for only the second time this season in a 2-0 home success over Atalanta.

Centre-back Cristian Panucci opened the scoring through a deflected strike before Montenegro forward Mirko Vucinic added the second with a slick turn and shot.

Interesting article.

Despite the 3-1 home defeat to Lazio, Torino coach Gianni De Biasi was not entirely dissatisfied with his team's performance.

"I think Torino played a great match until the 60th minute, with 5 incredible chances," he said. "We could not have done more. We can only complain about not having scored. Lazio had three shots on goal with two goals and one post.

"Lazio are a cynical team who took all of their chances, while we didn't."

De Biasi was sent off deep into injury time for protesting against the referee after he had made Nicola Amoruso repeat a penalty.

The match at the Olympic stadium saw a frantic finish as goalkeeper Matteo Sereni was sent off ten minutes before the end, and the referee also sent off another Torino player, Francesco Pratali, with a second yellow card a few minutes later. So perhaps it was understandable that the Torino coach felt it was unreasonable to have the penalty repeated.

Two goals from Mauro Zárate helped S.S. Lazio continue their fine start to the Serie A campaign with a 3-1 victory at Torino FC, but Atalanta BC lost ground with a 2-0 reverse at AS Roma and SSC Napoli defeated Bologna FC 1-0 to go second, at least until FC Internazionale Milano meet AC Milan later on today.

Late consolation

A summer loan signing from Qatari outfit Al-Saad, Zárate took his tally to six strikes from five games with efforts in the 63rd and 83rd minutes – his second a penalty – after Goran Pandev had put Lazio ahead on the half hour. Torino lost Matteo Sereni and Francesco Pratali to late red cards before Nicola Amoruso earned them a last-gasp consolation effort from the spot, but the visitors hung on to go top ahead of the Milan derby.

Denis decider

AS Roma warmed up for Wednesday's UEFA Champions League outing at FC Girondins de Bordeaux by overcoming Atalanta, who had been level with Lazio. Christian Panucci and Mirko Vučinić were on target in a 2-0 win. UEFA Cup contenders Napoli are one point behind Lazio and had Germán Denis to thank for hitting the winner with just three minutes to go at Bologna, a result that extends their unbeaten start.

Udinese win

Udinese Calcio also surged up the table, moving into third thanks to a 2-1 triumph at home against AC Siena. Lower down, Cagliari Calcio remain without a point after losing 2-0 to US Lecce, Reggina Calcio are still winless following a 1-0 defeat by US Città di Palermo and Sicily's other top-flight side, Calcio Catania secured victory by the same score against AC Chievo Verona to enter the top five.

....?

Anyways, MILAN ARE VICTORIOUS!

Take that all of you losers who said blah blah blah Ronaldinho cannot play blah blah blah

This was an amazing match I was on my feet the entire last 15 minutes.

Finally Ancelloti lets Ka-Pa-Ro play together!

They did amazing! Imagine if Pato was onside once or twice it could have easily been 3-0!

Ronaldinho almost scored twice when his beast of a shot was stopped by Julio Cesar, speaking of keepers Abbiati finally earns a clean sheet.

Great great match, I was worried Adriano was going to convert those nice chances. Could South America representation, there were more of them then were Italians on the pitch! They should rename the league Brasil Serie C lol.

Anyways, Ronaldinho did amazing, so there you go all of the haters you have nothing to say. Nice.

It's great to see a player like Ronaldinho on the score sheet again. A truly world class player who is worth his weight in gold.

This was classic mob/scandal like game. Inter were clearly robbed of what would have been a deserving draw for both teams. Cmon 2 sending offs, and no call on the Adriano elbow massacre near the end of the game. How did the ref not see that elbow? This is why I cannot stand Italian football...great skills and matchups, but too much corruption in my eyes. A draw would have been the most justified result.

DaJohnner. Open your eyes, bud. It appears scandal occurs everywhere. Sending a guy off who is already on the bench should not effect the outcome of the game anyway. I own a Materrazzi jersey but even I'll say he has a reputation for having a foul mouth and is always at the center of controversy. Live with it.
