Danish smash and grab shocks Portuguese

AFP - 11 September 2008 00:20

Denmark´s Daniel Jensen celebrates after scoring the third goal against Portugal during their qualifying football match for the FIFA World Cup South Africa-2010 at the Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon. Denmark won the match 3-2.

LISBON (AFP) - Denmark came from behind with two goals in injury time to shock Portugal 3-2 in their World Cup Group one qualifier in Lisbon on Wednesday.

A penalty from Chelsea star Deco four minutes from time looked to have secured a routine win for the Portuguese, coached by former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz, after Arsenal's Nicklas Bendtner had levelled the hosts opener on 42 minutes from United winger Nani.

But in a frantic finale the Danes, surprise European champions in 1992 but who have been virtually off the radar since, turned the match on its head as Christian Poulsen netted in the 90th minute and Daniel Jensen scored the clincher in the second minute of time added on.

The win gives Morten Olsen's side a massive boost after they could only draw their first match away to Hungary while the Portuguese, still badly missing the injured Cristiano Ronaldo, won 4-0 at little Malta.

With only the top side guaranteed to go through and Sweden also in the Group One mix, Queiroz will have to rally the troops after this unexpected home loss.

2 goals in added extra time?!! I was afraid teams I was rooting for might lose like that today. What a surprise.

It was a great game. Portugal missed 4 great chances to clinch the match, but Denmark played in an attacting style. Portugal needs C Ronaldo (injured) and Quaresma back soon! Players like Nuno Gomes and Maniche should`n play for Portugal anymore (I respect them for all they did in years, but... their time has come.

Greetings for the Danish, you really played well tonight! Bravo Danmark!

For Portugal fans, there is little to do to avoid a loss like this, it's like fate.

This just means it is more important to defeat Sweden who figues to be a top dog in this group as well as the next Denmark match. It is clear that Albania with a win and a draw and Hungary can both put up a good game. Malta drew the Turks in the last qualifying campaign but are not that strong. This was just a bad game and Portugal needs to rebound and it looks doable.

Portugal is not a great side and never has been. It's possible that they may not qualify for WC 2010.

Worstalent, rest assured you don't piss me off; there are far more important things in my life. As I have told you in the past I find you very boring and tedious, nothing new ever comes from you. In a way I feel quite sorry for you, you sad little character. My first post was suggesting to you that you really are wasting your own time, nobody else’s!

Giorgio: I know, I think, Portugal has made a lot of Euros but not that many World Cup competitions through the whole history of the competition, off the top of my head, '66, '86 and then? I'm not sure, I know the last 2, maybe last 3.

Whether it is a convincing win or a big loss, this last round was but one 2 games for all these teams.

Bes Talent, please be a little more imaginative. I'm sure you don't like to be known as a dummy. You must have more sense than what you're showing!

As the Portugal expert here on Soccerway...I must first say congrats to Denmark on a well played game. As far as Portugal goes...they will struggle to make it because despite all their individual talent, they lack a solid striker with pure striker ability. The best they had most recently has since retired (Pauleta) and unfortunately they miss too many of their offensive opportunities. Hopefully they can rebound, but should they qualify, it will be in the final game at the last minute as always. Forca Portugal!!!

One's got to be ready for these things, in the 2004 Euro Cup: France got two 2 goals to defeat England in a similar kind of game and as someone mentioned, the way, Turkey was able to defeat Croatia in the Euro Cup. It's difficult to say a team didn't deserve to win.
