Aussies stun mighty Dutch

EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands (AFP) - Australia warmed up for their final round of World Cup qualifiers in style on Saturday by stunning the Netherlands 2-1 in a friendly international.

The Socceroos, who face a tricky trip to Uzbekistan on Wednesday in their opening game of the deciding Asian qualifying round for the 2010 World Cup, fell behind to a sixth-minute volley from Klas-Jan Huntelaar.

But Harry Kewell levelled on the stroke of half-time from the penalty spot after the Dutch had seen goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg red-carded.

Australia made sure of victory when Josh Kennedy hit the winner in the 76th minute.

The defeat was a setback for the Dutch and their new coach Bert van Marwijk, who succeeded Marco van Basten, ahead of their first Group qualifier against Macedonia in Skopje on Wednesday.

Australia, meanwhile, will be wary of an Uzbekistan backlash after they lost their opening qualifier 3-0 to Qatar in Doha on Saturday.

Maybe that big win over Italy in the last ECup was a fluke! Ajax, what do you think?

Fred,

That 1st goal that the Dutch scored against Italy, in Euro 2008, was off side and that goal changed the balance of the whole game.

Actually that has been discussed, it was not off side. ;-)

Whatever, I am not aware of how exactly the Australians will compete to go to the World Cup but it must be a difficult road. They've had problems in some of their Asian games so I certainly want to see them at the big dance.

All in all: I'm starting to enjoy the friendlies and the qualifiers as much as the world cup, the internet and satellite tv makes it easier to keep up with it. 20 years ago, it wasn't as easy to share opinions about all this.

Australia must be considered serious competitors in wc. Perhaps underated. It will be tough for them to come through Asia, if they make it people may be expecting them for another big impact in finals.
