Ireland give Trapattoni winning start

AFP - 6 September 2008 22:20

Ireland´s midfielder Glenn Whelan (L) celebrates scoring against Georgia with Ireland´s striker Kevin Doyle during their Football World Cup 2010 group 8 qualifying match in the western German city of Mainz. Ireland won 2-1.

MAINZ, Germany (AFP) - Republic of Ireland beat Georgia 2-1 in their opening World Cup Group Eight match here on Saturday to give Italian coach Giovanni Trapattoni a winning start in his first competitive match.

Kevin Doyle headed the Republic ahead on 13 minutes in the game which was played on neutral territory following the bloody conflict which erupted in Georgia last month.

A mistake by goalkeeper Giorgi Loria gifted the second goal to Glenn Whelan on 70 minutes before Levan Kenia gave Georgia a late consolation.

It wasn't the most convincing win by Ireland who are in the same group as defending champions Italy and they were fortunate to see Alexander Iashvili miss an easy chance to score for Georgia just before half-time.

Good for my old buddy Giovanni! I gave him a lesson on how to score goals in 1961. He still has not learned from it! Just 2 goals against Georgia? Well, he won the game. That's good enough!

Since Trap managed to make Benfica portuguese champion in 2004-05, I believe he can do ANYTHING! :)

Fred should tell us about his soccer career.

By the way, Georgia has been losing a lot lately, but the other games were friendlies. We'll see how Ireland fends in their next games but I think it looks like a good group for them to finish 2nd and then go on to the playoffs.

Ireland's second goal was kicked from 40 yards out and the goalkeeper made a mistake. Oh well, breaks are a part of the game.

Escape_to_Victory, I can only tell you that I was a prolific scorer. I did not make Serie A because of my short stature! My dream was to play for the Azzurri, but then, at one time I also dreamed of becoming Pope Peter the second. Certain dreams don't become reality!

Fred,

You wanted to become the Pope ? This I find difficult to believe !!!

Under your Profile, your interests are listed as, and I quote, "drinking, smoking, gambling and womanizing". So, if you were the Pope, what would the Vatican be to-day, a casino and a strip joint ?

Giorgio, the Vatican would not be worse off than at the time of Alexander the 6th! Do you remember that Borgia guy, the father of Lucrezia?
