France suffer catastrophic World Cup start

AFP - 6 September 2008 23:40

Patrice Evra (R) of France fights for ball with Martin Harnik of Austria during their World Cup 2010 qualifying football match at Ernst-Happel stadium in Vienna. France were outplayed 3-1 by little Austria, just 101st in the world, for a catastrophic start to their 2010 World Cup campaign to throw up further questions marks over coach Raymond Domenech.

VIENNA (AFP) - France were outplayed 3-1 by little Austria, just 101st in the world, for a catastrophic start to their 2010 World Cup campaign to throw up further questions marks over coach Raymond Domenech.

The 2006 World Cup finalists had a terrible Euro 2008, losing in the group phase, and this Group Seven result will further weaken the position of Domenech.

Goals by Marc Janko and Rene Aufhauser before the break put the hosts firmly in front but Sidney Govou got one back for France on the hour.

A converted penalty by Andreas Ivanschitz in the 72nd minute finished off the scoring and France's fate.

The French football federation will surely be keenly expecting a better result against Serbia on Wednesday at the Stade de France and against Romania on October 11.

A non-committal Domenech told TF1 television after the match: "It's difficult to analyse what happened immediately. I will have to look at the match again to see what exactly happened before making comments. I have impressions of the match but I will need to verify them.

"What disappointed me the most? To have lost."

The first two goals by the Austrians were similar.

The first came when a freekick by Ivanschitz was badly negotiated by French centre backs William Gallas and Philippe Mexes and Janko found the net.

Then in the 41st minute, another freekick by Ivanschitz was put in the net by Aufhauser with Gallas getting a touch.

And a Mexes foul on Janko gave away the penalty to confirm the victory of Karel Bruckner's men and it was clear on the night France missed the likes of retired defender Lilian Thuram.

Earlier in the 61st minute Govou, making the most of the absence of Franck Ribery, had scored for France but it was not enough to prevent defeat.

Austria had ridden their luck a little however as just in the 15th minute, Sebastian Proedl managed to scare keeper Alex Manninger by hitting the ball on to his own crossbar, and Jeremy Toulalan had a great chance in the 66th minute.

France's shaky defence is proving a problem; in the last four matches, they have conceded 11 goals.

France captain Thierry Henry agreed there were serious defensive problems. "We are not down-and-out and there is still time but to qualify, if we defend like we did tonight against freekicks, we are in trouble. It's not normal," Henry said.

"We were playing away from home and all they had (were freekicks) and look what happened. We tried to get back into the match and had about 30 minutes to score again but after the penalty was given away it didn't happen."

zarkaa, why don't you take over Domenech's job. Maybe you could change France's luck!

And maybe they were smug against Austria, after all they are ranked about 102nd but they've played Germany, Italy, well, along with Croatia and Poland. I'm happy for the Austrians, I don't see how France can rebound against Serbia who must've beat the Faroe Islands.

Azemzi,

First of all you are the one that should bre banned, for using offensive language.

And secondly you must learn to speak and write proper English, because, many a time, your comments are incomprehensible.

azemzi, if you had a good argument, you defeated it yourself by stating it indecently!

Bes Talent, if you knew how oriental people were treated here at one time, you would know you were not the only racist in the world!

BesTalentScout

7 September 2008 15:46

it's not that i'm racist but i hate to see players play for their adopted countries, that's all............

i hate the Singapore team too and hope they lose every time they play other countries coz they have adopted players from Brazil, China, Croatia and Nigeria.........

yup, i hope my own national team loses each time they play...........how's that ?

7 September 2008 16:01

Bes Talent, that's not good enough. You didn't mention Italy in your list of nations, therefore, you're not a racist!

The former Czechia coach I believe runs Austria, Brueckner or something. So Austria did well. I once watched Austria routed really bad in about 2002, around there, they looked extremely poor so they should be congradulated on their turnaround.

For the record, one of the politicians in France has said things like what some are saying here, so I don't think one should interpret what people are saying as being racist.

BesTalentScout i m sorry I didn't know you are from Singapoure , because we european people usually we dont mention country of adoption , or color ...etc . What you said is normal may be for you and your culture ...

Let's go back to football ...France lost yesterday with dominating completly the game ...Austria got three chances , 2 free kicks and one corner where they got a penalty ... stupid mistakes made ..In my point of view , Austria won without playing nice football , this is just the first game and believe I will come back here at the end and I will congratulate the first one France for their qualification , and Serbia or Romania .

It is definitely hard to believe why France football federation insist to keep Domenech as coach of national team. They saw many disappointing performances in euro2008 and now again awful start to qualifying groups with an away lost to weak Austria!!! Apparently France should revise his remarks on Domenech immediately if not we may not see France in wc2010.

Lithuania ripped the Romanians there real well 3-0: sometimes other teams come to the fore and they've played enough good soccer in recent years to merit going. Yes, this is a bit offtopic but someone mentioned Romania and apparently this is the second time, Lithuania has been stuck in France's group. Lithuania hosts Austria, so if one of those two win, 6 points will be a lot to start off.

azemzi

7 September 2008 21:41

Yep , but there are still 9 games to play !! If you think about Finland for example they dominated their group last year , but by the end they didnt even qualify ...Because Serbia and Portugal made more points ...France just has to win next game against Serbia and then they will all have same points Romania , Austria ,France , Serbia and may be a little advantage for Lithuania ...let's say a bit tough group but I do believe France and Romania will come back and top the group ....

Azemzi: It was Poland and Portugal that advanced from that group which had Finland, Serbia and Belgium. I guess Serbia missed the Euro.
