Ferguson unfazed by Man City millions

AFP - 5 September 2008 16:15

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, seen here in April 2008, said he was not worried by the takeover of city rivals Manchester City by billionaire Arab owners who have pledged to take it to the top of the Premier League.

NYON, Switzerland (AFP) - Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said on Friday he was not worried by the takeover of city rivals Manchester City by billionaire Arab owners who have pledged to take it to the top of the Premier League.

"I can't be worried," Ferguson told reporters after a meeting of top European coaches at UEFA's headquarters here.

"We have a good set-up ourselves, we've been working for years to build the team we've got," he said.

"There's always challenges in football, some years ago it was Chelsea, some years ago it was Arsenal, and whenever the challenges come you have to accept it, it doesn't change anything," Ferguson added.

Sulaiman al-Fahim, of City's new owners, the Abu Dhabi United Group, has pledged to take the club into the top four this season, and has already swiped Brazil striker Robinho from under the noses of Chelsea, buying him from Real Madrid for around 42 million euros (61.6 million dollars).

The club is reportedly planning a record 135-million-pound bid for Manchester United's star winger Cristiano Ronaldo, just after Ferguson fended off a lengthy summer courtship by Real Madrid.

The Scotsman was dismissive Friday of any possible approach from the Blues.

"Yeah well... they can talk," he said.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger also attended the meeting and told reporters the volumes of cash pouring into the game reflect its preeminent global status.

"Football is the most popular sport in the world. It attracts money, that is quite positive," he said.

"It is down to the football world to regulate the impact of money well, that it must not make the game worse but better," Wenger added.

Wow Wenger finally understands it's positive that football attracts money lol ....But what Alex means when he says some years ago it was Chelsea, some years ago it was Arsenal ?? He believes it's City's turn ???

What he is saying is: Yes, city will get their chance in the limelight but as always United will come out on top.

Or may be he meant too that United had their chance after 90's when they had more money than all other ones , but City who joined the big 4 will make even more harder to them if you just remember City kicked two times United last year and won both games ...

it is not all about the money guys, it a question of 11 goods players against 11 other rich players. Real Madrid got money and no UEFA C.L. CUP for years now. AC got money no UEFA C.L. this year. again i say it is not about the money. JUST 11 GOOD PLAYERS OKEY!

You think really United players are playing for free :D United was the first club to deal this huge money things , but now that more money went to other sides they start shouting and ask for reglementation .. Are you proud about penalty shootings against Portsmouth and Chelsea and you call that nice football and success?

lol azemzi... i had to look up reglementation. Money on its own isn't going to make a great football club - what you do with it is a lot more important. If Mark Hughes is astute enough to form a cohesive team with the millions pouring in, then they'll do well. But he's no Ferguson or Wenger or Capello or Benitez or Scolari so it remains to be seen where he takes ManCity.

Newtonheath, not everyone is capable of reading between the lines like you can!

Catch up with Liverpool first, then use the phrase "as always". For in the long run manure successes are few and far between.

We'll see bandwagon boy, we'll see!

Major flaws with the new owners of City’s comments are the comments themselves. I'm a great believer in keeping your cards close to your chest. Shouting from the rooftops about how well you are going to do and who you hope to buy is kind of like showing your hand. I'm sure a lot of Europe's top clubs will be now very wary of big money bids from City as regardless of how much is on the table the counter productiveness of selling to city will not be worth it in the long run!

I feel Liverpool have a lot more to worry about than Manchester United.

Well, well Ajax. You have finally achieved it! I was starting to doubt myself for a couple of weeks and had started to turn to the idea that you were a half intelligent debater, but no you have proved me right! You’ve finally turned into one of the LOL DOL numbskulls like worstalent and DaJohnner and the only type of bater you have proven to be is one of the mastur kind. Give yourself a round of applause but watch you don’t make a mess!

DaJohnner, Torres in a blue shirt, Gillette & Hicks will just not be able to resist the cash!

Well Ajax, maybe now Manchester City will buy out your team of future stars. At least I see Huntelaar going and others if they're good also. Maybe you can battle it out with Twente since Feyenoord and PSV should be out of your league till January. You can cry all you want about how big clubs bully your team and how good a team your club could've been but face it, your team's glory belongs to the past as well as my team's (Crvena Zvezda) does!!!

DaJohnner, at least Manchester United don't underperform like Liverpool does every single year. You're the first candidates to quit top4 and you know it!
