Serie A Summer Transfer Season

Soccerway - 4 September 2008 00:40

Ronaldinho at his new club, AC Milan

With all of Italy’s top clubs making changes to their rosters, the Serie A title is wide open this season. Soccerway.com tracks the biggest changes made by four of Italy’s biggest teams. Which team made the most headway in the season’s transfer market?

AC Milan

Flamini: Milan’s first transfer brought the young combative Frenchman to the San Siro after an exceptional coming out season with Champions League quarter-finalists Arsenal. Will he become the next big French star?

Zambrotta: In order to strengthen Milan’s comparatively weak defence, Zambrotta returned to Italy, this time wearing the Red and Black. Is he still one of the best defenders in the world?

Shevchenko: Milan legend returns after 2 dismal years in England. Milan supporters hope he get’s back to his best.

Ronaldinho: Probably the biggest transfer in the world this summer. His first game against Bologna showed that Ronaldinho may become one of the best players in the world once again.

Inter

Mancini: Brazilian Mancini has added even more quality to the already star studded Inter line-up. His ability to play as a defender, midfielder and forward gives Inter great options.

Quaresma: The young Portuguese midfielder was one of the most sought after midfielders this transfer season after his maturation this past season.

Juventus

Mellberg: Juventus added more height and experience to the Juventus backline in their quest to regain their title as one of the best teams in Europe.

Amauri: New Brazilian sensation Amauri was captured early in the transfer season and gives Juve a much needed 4th striker to help the Turin club compete in all competitions this season.

Roma

Baptista: The loss of Mancini to Inter may have hurt the Roman club, that is up until the capture of “La Bestia” to add more muscle to the team.

Menez: Another possible French star was tracked by many top teams, but Roma captured him and will be looking to turn this youngster into a great player for many years to come.

I would have to say that AC did the most to try to improve. Sadly, a good deal of the players could be considered "has beens." It will be difficult to consider that Schevy, Zambrotta, and Ronaldino will find the form of their glory years.

It's funny though - AC Milan adds to the old boys club with three more. Yet, I think they were all fantastic signings and Milan will pose a huge threat this year!

I think this segment is very slanted and biased towards a positive milan opinion. There are 4 players listed for them and with possibly the exception of Ronaldinho (who hasn't played excellent lately) none are still considered world class. I mean Flamini is mentioned and yet has only been a bit part player at Arsenal for years, only playing last year due to injuries - here he is considered a potential french star??? Yet Muntari who cost in the region of 13m and was a driving force behind portsmouths success (FA cup winners) isn't even mentioned...

One begins to wonder who writes these things???

I believe Juventus has improved the most. Amauri will make a big difference.

Hey n1ck_m,

I wrote this article.

Even though these Milan players may be "has beens", they are still big players and quite mentionable.

Due to Flamini's development last year, I asked "Will he become the next big French star?" to make the article interesting and get people's opinions.

That's true about Muntari. To be honest I forgot about him.

You don't need to take these articles too seriously though. Everybody has their opinion and it's not the end of world if there are more Milan players on this list.

Nice to hear your opinion.

Take Care,

Giovanni

Inter will be dangerous, the most of them all. With Quaresma they get one star more but they should start buying Italian because if the 6+5 rule deploys, they can kiss their glory goodbye!
