I´m Italian not Ghanaian, insists Balotelli

AFP - 4 September 2008 16:05

Inter Milan´s teenage star Mario Balotelli, seen here in April 2008, pinned his colours firmly to Italy by insisting that he does not want to play for the land of his forefathers.

CASTEL DI SANGRO, Italy (AFP) - Inter Milan's teenage star Mario Balotelli pinned his colours firmly to Italy on Thursday by insisting that he does not want to play for the land of his forefathers.

Balotelli was born in Palermo to Ghanaian immigrants, whose surname is Barwuah, but when he was three years old he was entrusted to an Italian family, called Balotelli.

Due to Italian law he could not request Italian citizenship until he turned 18, last month, as he was never formally adopted and now he is part of the Italy under-21 squad.

"I'm Italian, I feel Italian, I will always play for Italy," he said.

"I've never considered playing for Ghana, even two years ago when they called me up."

He signed for Inter in 2006 and made his first team breakthrough last season, at just 17 years of age.

Ghana had tried to call him up for their national team but Balotelli turned them down several times to pursue his dream of playing for Italy.

Enough with this nonsense. We've discussed it before. Who's the smart guy bringing this issue up again? M. Balotelli or Pallottelle was born in Palermo. Isn't that enough to make him Italian? He's a great young player and I'm looking forward to see him soon with the "Azzurri."

I funzionari del Ghana, ovviamente, non si sa come prendere non per una risposta. Non ho davvero visto molto di questo ragazzo gioco, è colui che il buon Fred?

newtonheath, don tell me that you wrote the answer in Italian all by yourself? In that case, it would make you Italian as well? You think Ghanainan cannot take no for an answer?

I would imagine he's eligible to play for both, but obviously the final decision is upto him. He feels more Italian, so he should follow his heart. But he can't deny that he is Ghanaian by blood and ethnicity, which hopefully he doesn't.

Well we Ghanaians aint forcing you either to feature for us. We know you are Ghanaian by blood that was why our authorities approached you to play for us which you declined. We as Ghanaians have accepted and respected your decision and have wished you the very best in your career so why dont you mind your business and play for the Italians as you wish, do you always have to talk about not considering Ghana, since 2007 no official of the Ghanaian FA has approached you, we are happy with our players who feel proud to don our national colours and that is enough for us. You are not the first Ghanaian to play for a foreign team, Marcel Desailly, Freddy Adu, Gerald Asamaoh just to name a few have featured for other national teams and definitely you wont be the last. None of the named players spoke in this manner, cos irrespective of where they found themselves, the blood in them is Ghanaian. We Ghanaians dont feel bitter about your decision or that of others who want to play for other teams as we believe its about personal choices and ambitions, so please spare us your gobbling and concentrate on Inter and Azzuri. We are proud of what we have, my only advice to you Barwuah Balotelli is that no one points his left hand to his fathers house and you cant change who you are. Good luck to you in all you do.

Exellent piece of thought kponkpa! Congrats.

Being aand feeling are two completely different things. The guy's too young to realize it now but in due time he will.

Kpongpa, then, who's spreading the rumor about Balotelly? Whoever he is, let it rest. You seem to be a bit resentful that Mario does not want to play for Ghana.

Ajax, the color of the skin does nor matter. I can name you hundreds of American top players with black skin. In USA we adore Tiger Woods, M. Jordan, E. Smith, C. Lewis and may others. It's not a big deal anymore!

hmmm..........i wonder what would have been Balotelli's choice if he had been of pure Italian blood but born in Ghana instead ?

or if Ghana is as rich as an Arab nation while Italy is a 3rd world nation ?

HEY, maybe in a couple years...........Italy can join France in the African's Nations Cup too...........!

I hope he does not regret with his decision in the future. The fact is that it might be an honour to play for bigger countries but its not easy getting chances. The best example I can think of is Gerald Asmoah. Even he chose germany instead of Ghana. Now we also have Bojan Krkic of Barcelona who could choose Spain instead of his native Serbia. I just hope these new comers don't regret

Bes Talent, "Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones!" You would not talk like that If you knew how oriental people were treated here a few years ago!.

NewtonHeath,

Your Italian is impressive. You're an intelligent man !!

Tontodonati

5 September 2008 10:14

Newtonheath, I'm impressed. Keep it up! Those who speak more than one language expand their horizon. Language is the greatest carrier of culture which in turn removes fear of other people! Your Italian is as good as my English (or as poor, if you prefer that word).

Giorgio

5 September 2008 10:18

Balotelli an Italian ? I don't think so.

Maybe he was born in Italy, he carries an Italian passport and he has Italian citizenship. But he's not Italian.

And I think he will realise it a few years from now !!

Tontodonati

5 September 2008 10:41

Giorgio, for the first time I'm disappointed about your remarks on Mario! The only culture Mario knows is OUR culture. He speaks OUR language and he wants to play for ITALY, not to mention that he was born in Italy. What more do we want? There's no such thing as Italian blood, French blood or English blood. Language carries culture and Mario carries Italian culture and way of life. As I said before, I'm looking forward to seeing him play for our Azzurri.

newtonheath1878

5 September 2008 10:43

Giorgio, I tend to agree with you a little here. I was born, raised and continue to live in Manchester, England. I'm a proud Mancunian and hold a British passport but my heritage is Irish/Romany and if Eire would have coming knocking at my door in my footballing days I would have found it very difficult to turn them down as deep down I see myself as Irish!

newtonheath1878

5 September 2008 10:51

Sorry Fred! I see your point and don't get me wrong, my opinion and choices are just that, mine. I do agree with you in that Mario has the choice and his choice has to be respected, just as I would have the choice between England & Eire. At the end of the day Mario has made his decision on what he feels most affiliated to and that has to stand for something. A quick question Fred. If you had the choice to play for the USA, Canada or Italy which would you choose?

Tontodonati

5 September 2008 11:07

Newtonheath, good question! As it is now, I would probably play for Canada. Of course, 40 years ago I would have played for Italy. But let us not fool ourselves here because we all know the kind of problem M Balotelli is facing. The color of his skin is a stumbling block for too many people and it's interfeering with his desire to play for his country, Italy. Let us not take other excuses or reasons! People have the right to choose and Mario has chosen Italy. Punto e basta!

newtonheath1878

5 September 2008 11:55

If it is his skin colour that is causing the discrimination within Italian society on whether he should play for Italy then he should stick to his guns. And if you are Italian and feel he shouldn’t play for Italy because of his skin colour then you should be ashamed of yourselves!

since so many players are playing for foreign countries..................heck, why don't we scrap the World Cup ?

all play for the New World Order championships..............

5 September 2008 12:59

Fred,

Sorry to have disappointed you.

I don't want to get into a political discussion, or some heavy discussion about racism, because it wouldn't be appropriate to do so on SoccerWay. However, I stand by what I said earlier !!!

NakedWake

6 September 2008 20:13

It's a tough call. I was born and raised in the US but stand by my Italian heritage with great pride. When people ask me what I am, I say Italian. I don't give it a second thought. My parents are Italian, both born there. Does this make me more or less Italian than Mario? He was born and raised there, despite having an African heritage. It's a tough call, really.

Tontodonati

7 September 2008 19:59

NakedWake, good point! You have learned some Italian heritage because you were raised by your Italian parents. Your culture, though, is more American than Italian because you, more or less, live the USA's lifestyle. Bolatelli doesn't even know Ghana's culture because he was raised by Italians. But let me ask to the other guys here: If Mario had been blond and blue eyes would anyone care where he came from?

azemzi

7 September 2008 20:08

Giorgio you are not more italian than Mario , and not less south african than Mandela !!!

Tontodonati

azemzi, for once you're making sense, and you didn't even have to be vulgar about it!
