Blatter against Euro expansion

Jonathan Roorda - 3 September 2008 23:56

Joseph Blatter

ZÜRICH (SW) - FIFA president Joseph Blatter sees no future in the idea adopted by many parties to increase the amount of participating nations at European Champions from 16 to 24.

The plan was received positively by most involved, and the fifty domestic FA's are expected to put things on paper at a UEFA meeting on September 25th and 26th.

But if it's up to Blatter, things will stay as they are. Blatter worries about the fact that if this is to go through, almost half of Europe's member states would make an appearance at the final tournament.

Blatter feels that this would have a negative effect on the qualification tournament, which would be completely devalued, according to the chairman.

The European Championships have undergone several expansions in its history, from four, to eight and eventually to sixteen countries in 1996.

A 24-participants structure would be a repeat of the World Cup structure from 1982 to 1994. The teams are divided into six groups, and the top two of each group advances to the round of sixteen. The four best numbers three survive the group phase as well.

I agree with Blatter for once....keep it as is and allow the best to shine, not be fluked out by a bad day. There are plenty of chances(games) in which to try and qualify. Perhaps a better option might be to force host nations and defending champions to qualify too.

I agree completely with Blatter and DaJohnner. The "Finals" is meant for an exclusive best, not half of everyone. It may lend to increased revenue for the smaller FA's, but it devalues the tournament by adding in teams that don't necessarily have much of a chance to win.

Well, we all agree with Blatter. I too believe that the EC will lose its prestige when so many teams are allowed in.

Come on guys it's just football , we will see more games with more teams . Last tim we saw France Italy Holland Romania in same group , and all we know these 4 teams deserve to qualify for next round , instead of seeing more bad teams favorited by easy groups qualify instead ..... With 24 we will see England qualify , and teams like Finland , Norway ...etc instead of being kicked because of 1 goal average after many years of preparation !!!!!
