Robinho joins Manchester City

AFP - 1 September 2008 21:40

Real Madrid´s Brazilian player Robinho attends a news conference on August 31 in Madrid. Manchester City have made a last-minute offer of 35 million euros (51 million dollars) for Real Madrid´s Brazilian striker Robinho, who wants to join Chelsea, Spanish media reported Monday.

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City signed Brazil striker Robinho from Real Madrid for a fee of around 42 million euros (61.6 million dollars), the English Premier League club confirmed on Tuesday.

Robinho agreed a four-year contract with Mark Hughes's side shortly before the close of the transfer window.

The 24-year-old had repeatedly said he wanted to join Chelsea but Real's president Ramon Calderon told news radio Cadena Ser that the English club only offered 30 million euros for the player.

City took advantage of the stalemate to make a shock move on the same day that United Arab Emirates-based investment group, Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment (ADUG), agreed to buy the club.

"Manchester City have made a dramatic late deadline-day swoop for Real Madrid's Brazilian forward Robinho," a statement on City's website confirmed.

Hughes believes the signing underlines City's determination to become a major force in the Premier League.

"I am absolutely delighted to get the opportunity to work with such an incredible talent like Robinho," Hughes said. "I have said that in order to compete with the best teams in the Premier League we have to be in the market for players of this calibre, and Robinho is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world.

"I am really looking forward to introducing him to the rest of the squad, and to the City fans at the earliest opportunity. This is a real statement of intent as to the ambitions of Manchester City Football Club."

Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Monday that he believed Manchester City will become a major force as a result of his decision to sell the club to ADUG.

Unlike Chelsea, Manchester City is not taking part in the European Champions League.

Robinho said Sunday that his "head was at Chelsea" at a press conference where he once again asked to be allowed to join the English side which is coached by Brazil's Luiz Felipe Scolari.

And they still think they'll get Villa. Who are they kidding?

The new City guys are like vacuum cleaner - try to suck in anything that stands in their way.

Does the name Shevchenko ring a bell to Robinho?

I don't know if this is so, but some say these new guys are even going to be wealthier than Roman.

I'd hate to see some owners so (Oil) rich they can buy any player. That's close to people's beef with Abramovich.

If this report is true. DaJohnner will not like it!

DaJohnner, "Vive le Canada libre!" Do you remember that statement uttered by French President Charles De Gaul in Quebec in 1967?

Actually he said: "Vive le Quebec libre!" But I, a true Canadian, changed it! Italian born, but true Canadian I am. Canada has been very good to me! See you next month in Toronto.

soccerwayhooligan, I assume you're referring to my posting. You're an off-topic yourself with your intelligent handle and, as such, you resent anything over and above your obtuse mind. Get a life, that's if you can! There is more to life than just soccer!

SWH must mean that last time, they didn't suspend one person's posting privileges, they suspended everyone's posting privileges. Now, they've got the new system and personally, I like it.

I see there are discussions groups on here but I've never really looked at them too much.

I feel Robinho is playing his silly games again, it is only a hunch but I have a sneaky feeling that he is using this move to city as a stepping stone to Chelski in the January transfer window. There was no way Real were going to sell to Chelsea and there was no way Robinho could have stayed at Real following his press conference at the weekend. When he was at Santos and Real showed an interest in him he went on strike until Santos sold him, I can see a similar thing happening at city when January comes!

guys you don't seem to read into Robinho's mind. He was supposedly a makeshift factor in Real's bid for Ronaldo who without prejudice is not in robinho's class. It is share stupidity and idiocy by Schuster and Miatovic to make such a mistake after the poor guy helped them to win the local league. Makelele should equally ring bells not just Schevy!

We don't butt into stories about the Italian leagues, talking about Holland or England, but Tontadoni does that all the time.

This has to be one of the craziest moves, by any soccer player.

But then, maybe not. Robinho has never lived up to expectations and I don't believe he ever will !!!
