Cannavaro closes in on Maldini Italian record

AFP - 8 October 2008 19:10

Italian skipper Fabio Cannavaro, seen her in June 2008, said Wednesday that the international appearances record of Paolo Maldini, who played 126 times for the world champions, is coming into reach.

ROME (AFP) - Italian skipper Fabio Cannavaro said Wednesday that the international appearances record of Paolo Maldini, who played 126 times for the world champions, is coming into reach.

"I've not really thought about it, to be honest - but records are there to be broken," said 35-year-old defender Cannavaro who is eight games away from levelling Maldini's mark.

"The years go by but I've no intention of packing it in yet," said the Real Madrid star in the national squad's get together at Florence ahead of Saturday's World Cup qualifier with Bulgaria in Sofia.

"As long as I am called up I'll always arrive full of enthusiasm. For me it is an honour to pull on the Italian shirt."

Maldini, five years Cannavaro's senior, is still in action with AC Milan.

But Cannavaro says that the punishing schedule of today's game means he is looking after himself and conscious of the need not to overdo things.

"I am managing things better this season. I have played in five of seven matches for Real and that's good.

"It's better to play 40 matches on form than 60 on average form."

Two of the finest defenders the world has ever witnessed.

To me, Maldini is UnTouChaBLe.

Simply the best defender.

I don't like to think that next year Paolo Maldini will be retiring, yet it's a fact. Lets hope he carries one or two cups this year, that's the least this wonderful player deserves for his long fantastic career.

I like Maldini a little more because he never left Italy to play for a foreign team. Cannavaro, however, is displaying the same, or even greater, desire to represent his country. Unlike many players who after 30 years of age retire from the national team because "it conflicts with Club's interests!" Cannavaro knows the honor and prestige associated with playing for their country. That's one of the reasons Italy has won 4 World Cups.

WorstTalent,

Actually these 2 guys are still very good players, even though Maldini is 40 and Cannavaro is 35.

It's rare to find players who are still competitive at an advanced age.

hahaha ... Old farts !!!

I guess that makes Roger Milla ( Cameron ) a DINASAUR for playing at the age of 42 in the World Cup 1994 ...
