Capello stunned by England progress

AFP - 21 November 2008 01:10

England manager Fabio Capello, pictured in October 2008, admitted on Friday that he has been stunned by the progress made by a team which was in utter disarray when he took over in February.

LONDON (AFP) - England manager Fabio Capello admitted on Friday that he has been stunned by the progress made by a team which was in utter disarray when he took over in February.

When he succeeded the hapless Steve McClaren, who failed to qualify for the Euro 200 finals, Capello realised the task he faced when his new charges laboured to victory against Switzerland at Wembley.

But since then, England have won four successive World Cup qualifiers for the first time in their history and then brought the curtain down on 2008 with a 2-1 win over Germany in Berlin on Wednesday.

"We are further forward than I thought we would be after our first year," said Capello.

"I always watched the Premier League, so I knew the players. But when we played against Switzerland I understood the work was going to be very hard. It was a very big job."

Plenty of thoughts went through Capello's mind in the days afterwards as he analysed what he had taken on, but depression was not one of them.

"I was not depressed," he added. "It was a challenge but that is the reason I am here.

"I am very happy because we have taken one step forward with every game."

Capello is over-rated.............achieving success only with big clubs is no big deal...........

i still remember his 2nd stint at a very troubled Milan ended with him being FIRED !

he's also not loyal............always moving to the next big club and stealing players from his previous club..........

ANYONE taking over from the previous England manager will look like a messiah.............

Ahahahahahahahaha.

England is doing alright now but I mean they failed to qualify for the EURO and now they are doing great but it won't last. By the time the World Cup rolls around they will be on the outs.

Just like Italy, they do terribly in the EURO, now they are doing better, and when the World Cup comes, good-bye.

Certainly England has looked MUCH better in recent matches than before, but the job still isn't done. There's still a lot that can happen between now and South Africa. Capello needs to keep his team focused on the task at hand. Good luck to him.

DaJohnner, wise words! You wouldn't happen to be a politician, would you? Liberal or Conservative? If you're like me, you must be a Liberal. I loved Pierre Elliot Trudeau. He was the greatest Canadian politician, albeit the worst economist!

Crusader, I've mistaken you for DaJohnner. I must be growing more senile than I thought. Well, disregard my posting above!

Just for the record Crusader is right, and unfortunately my senile friend...I am in fact a Conservative supporter, although I can appreciate TRUDEAU because my dad was also a huge fan of his.
