Jonathan Roorda - 19 November 2008 23:09

Gekas of Greece

ATHENS (SW) - Greece and Italy held each other to a 1-1 draw in an international friendly on Wednesday.

Euro 2004 champions Greece even took the lead through Gekas in the 50th minute, but Bayern Munich's in form striker Luca Toni headed home four minutes later for 1-1.

Tonight's match was only the fourth meeting between these two sides. The most recent clash was 27 years ago, with a 1-1 draw as result as well.

So far, Greece have never defeated the Azzurri.

I would laugh at Italy if this was the same Greece at the EURO 2008....but this is the Greece at the top of their qualification group is it not?

I expect Italy to be better

Great goal by Luca Toni. Congratulations to Marcello Lippi for having broken Vittorio Pozzo unbeaten run. 1-1 tie in Greece is nothing to write home about, nevertheless it's a positive step toward our 5th WC victory in RSA 2010.

Giorgio, we're coming to RSA

Fred,

I look forward to seeing you in SA in 2010.

And this result gives Lippi a new record of 31 consecutive unbeaten matches. I believe there are only 2 other coaches in the world who have done something similar.

Joga, Italy isn't playing to win these matches. Lippi himself says these matches are for evaluating new talent.
