Man Utd fans take club to task over tickets

Liverpool´s Argentinian midfielder Javier Mascherano (left) is shouted at by Manchester United fans as he leaves the pitch after being sent off during the Premier League game at Old Trafford, Manchester, north-west England, March 2008. Manchester United are embroiled in an ugly row with their own supporters after a fans group reported to the European champions to the Office of Fair Trading.

MANCHESTER, England (AFP) - Manchester United are embroiled in an ugly row with their own supporters after a fans group reported to the European champions to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).

The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) has lodged official papers with the OFT which claim that the club has 'breached its statutory and legal obligations to season ticket holders'.

MUST are furious with United's insistence on implementing a 'compulsory cup scheme', which forces season ticket holders to agree in advance to buy tickets for cup games even though they do not know how many they will have to pay for and who the opposition will be.

"Over recent years we have seen unfair terms and huge ticket price rises imposed on supporters by club owners taking advantage of their loyalty," said MUST chief executive Duncan Drasdo.

"MPs from all political parties have raised concerns and even the minister for sport felt it necessary to launch an outspoken attack on the huge price rises at Old Trafford in recent years.

"For a long time Manchester United was by no means the worst offender having previously had an admirable policy of keeping prices relatively low despite the success of the club. All that changed when the Glazers took over.

"However now, with the help of a team of eminent competition lawyers, economists and experts in sports law, we have been able to compile a comprehensive complaint based on Competition and Contract Law, which could have welcome consequences for supporters at clubs throughout the country."

United are yet to make any official comment but the Premier League champions are likely to mount a robust defence of their position.

newtonheath, what's this all about? Is your favorite team trying to raise money to compete with their richer rivals Man. City?

Lets keep the supporter for the club, be reasonable an dont ever think that your supporter arent important to the advancement of the club.. think it though.

All supporters wish Fergie to pay king´s ransom for Ronaldo (150,000 pounds a week) , and I guess the tickets cost is not a problem for them too ;) .ManU is doing right ;)

Sorry for the late response Fred.

This argument has been bubbling away for some time now; there are a lot of fans frustrated by the clubs season ticket policy. The club implemented a rule whereas if you have a season ticket (which predominantly gives entry for league matches) they want commitment from the fans that they will also buy tickets for any cup matches (FA Cup, league cup etc). It doesn’t really bother me, even though I am season ticket holder I do conform to buying the cup match tickets and if I cannot make the game in question I normally sell them on at higher than face value. I can though see the frustration endured by others; nobody should be forced to agree to buy something in advance without knowing what the product will be.

Even though it looks wrong from the outside, United are not the only guilty party when it comes to fans extortion. United have been offering lower tickets prices than any of the other so called big four for some time with ticket prices ranging from £26- £48. I feel sorry for the Gooners as they have to pay anything between £48- £94 per ticket, now that’s daylight robbery if I have ever seen it!
