Anderlecht beats Club Brugge to close in on European place

Soccerway - 5 May 2008 08:01

RSC Anderlecht took a significant step towards UEFA Champions League football next season after beating rivals Club Brugge KV 2-0 at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium on Saturday. The key moments in the match came in the opening half-hour. Stanislav Vlček opened the scoring after 17 minutes, tapping in from a rebound after Nicolas Frutos had headed against the post following good work from Mbark Boussoufa. Brugge's task became taller ten minutes later when Karel Geraerts was sent off for a tackle on Boussoufa and the home side took advantage of their numerical superiority when Jelle Van Damme headed in a Boussoufa corner after 30 minutes. The Brussels side moved on to 67 points with the win, three ahead of their opponents with one game remaining. Anderlecht will join champions R. Standard de Liège in UEFA Champions League qualifying with a result from their visit to RAEC Mons next Saturday while Brugge must overcome KVC Westerlo on the same day to have any chance of finishing second.
