Atl?co de Madrid beats Sevilla

Soccerway - 24 March 2008 07:37

Club Atlético de Madrid took a huge step towards earning a first UEFA Champions League campaign since 1996/97 when they triumphed 2-1 at Sevilla FC on Saturday night.

Sevilla were just two points behind fourth-placed Atlético at kick-off but that gap is now up to five with both teams having nine games left. Maxi Rodríguez opened the scoring on 19 minutes, and although Diego Capel's emphatic finish drew Sevilla level early in the second half after a Frédéric Kanouté shot was only parried, Agüero struck the winner not long before the hour mark when he turned in a cross from the right. The home team had to play the last 30 minutes with ten men following Enzo Maresca's dismissal, and should Atlético and Sevilla end up level the capital side have a superior head-to-head record.

In the other Saturday game, RCD Mallorca moved five points clear of the relegation zone and three ahead of RC Deportivo La Coruña thanks to Juan Arango's 23rd-minute goal in a 1-0 win. Among the Sunday fixtures, leaders Real Madrid CF welcome Valencia CF, FC Barcelona play Real Valladolid while RCD Espanyol and Real Racing Club Santander will both look to overtake Sevilla as they play relegation-threatened pair Real Murcia CF and RC Recreativo de Huelva respectively.
