Lyon target French double as PSG seek cup solace

PARIS (AFP) - Lyon, set fair for a seventh straight French league title, will try to bolster their hopes of the double while Paris Saint Germain, battling the drop, will seek solace in the Cup in midweek round of 16 matches.
Lyon and PSG are both in action Tuesday night while Bordeaux, second in the league but beaten in their crunch game at Lyon a week ago, Wednesday enjoy home advantage as they face fellow top flight outfit Lille for a place in the last eight. The romance of the competition is still in evidence as fifth division side Carquefou tackle ten-times winners Marseille at Nantes' Beaujoire stadium having already claimed the scalp of high-flying Nancy in the previous round. Marseille are keen to land their first silverware since their 1993 Champions Cup win which was tainted by a match-fixing scandal which emerged shortly afterwards and saw them relegated. Lyon, whose most recent of three cup triumphs came in 1973, will host holders Sochaux on Tuesday with Lyon keeper Gregory Coupet determined to make it a full house of domestic winners medals after claiming league cup honours in 2001 before the club's league domination set in. "The seventh title is paramount but we all want to lift the cup, especially me. It's the finest domestic competition," insisted Coupet, who has only ever been as far as the semis. Lyon coach Alain Perrin won the trophy with Sochaux before arriving at Stade Gerland. Laurent Blanc's Bordeaux, six points off the pace in the league, will face Lille shorn of the services of Geraldo Wendel, their goalscoring Brazilian midfielder, while midfielder Mathieu Chalme is suspended. Blanc wants to make it a personal hat-trick after winning the event as a player in 1990 with Montpellier and Auxerre six years later. PSG meanwhile face second division Bastia with the Parisians, already through to the league cup final, doing well in knockout events but only out of the relegation zone on goal difference. Rumours around the club suggest that coach Paul Le Guen will send out his reserves to save his top men's energy for a weekend crunch league match with Lyon. Elsewhere, Metz may be rock bottom in the league but coach Yvon Pouliquen is hell bent on a third cup success with relegated sides, having already taken Strasbourg to the trophy and the drop in 2001 and then Lorient a year later. Metz are away to fellow top flight side Lorient. Other ties see second division Dijon and Amiens host third tier sides in Tours and Arles while Sedan meet Angers in an all-second division encounter.
