ABERDEEN, Scotland (AFP) - Sir Alex Ferguson will take Manchester United to Aberdeen in July for a match to mark the 25th anniversary of his European Cup-Winners' Cup triumph with the Scottish side.
United manager Ferguson made his name as a football coach with Aberdeen.
During his six years in charge, the north-east club broke the Old Firm monopoly of Glasgow rivals Celtic and Rangers by winning three championships, four Scottish Cups and the European Cup-Winners' Cup before Ferguson left Pittodrie for Old Trafford in 1986.
Now Ferguson is set to return to Aberdeen with United on July 12 to mark the quarter of a century that has passed since the Dons defeated Spanish giants Real Madrid in Gothenburg.
Tom Smith, chairman of the Gothenburg Great Testimonial Committee, said: "It is a tremendous gesture from Manchester United, which will benefit both the Gothenburg Greats and Aberdeen's flourishing youth development programme."
