Andrea Pirlo's precision penalty helped Italy qualify

ZURICH, Jun 17 (SW) - Italy took advantage of some early mistakes by France to qualify for the Euro 2008 quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory in Group C on Tuesday, aided by the Dutch victory over Romania.

Italy started strong as Luca Toni dragged a shot wide after just four minutes that could have put the Azzurri in front, but France were hard done five minutes later when Franck Ribéry was forced off with a leg injury.

France would put themselves further behind it in the 25th minute when Eric Abidal was sent off for hauling down Toni in the penalty area, and Andrea Pirlo confidently smashed home from the spot to give Italy a 1-0 lead.

Fabio Grosso almost had a second just before half-time when his free kick was touched onto the post by Grégory Coupet, but it was delaying the inevitable.

In the 62nd minute, Daniele De Rossi's 30-yard free kick took a deflection off of Thierry Henry in the wall and wrong-footed Coupet, icing the game for the Italians.

Roberto Donadoni's men didn't come out unscaved though, as they will be without Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso for the quarter-final against Spain after they each picked up their second bookings of the group stage.

fall badly in front of Spain, hahaha....i guess you don't know how Spain has done in the knockout stages on past tournaments.....in every tournament Spain comes out blazing, scoring a lot of goals and everything, but in the knockout stages, it's bye bye for Spain

fanfanlatulipe, are you hiding? your wishes have come to smoke. So I think you should go and meet the Romania national team at the Bucharest airport.

wilikid, if I remember correctly you predicted Italy to be out today. Well, I hope you do not use the same judgement to play the lottery. Otherwise, you will end up broke in no time!

Everybody always talks about how great a game it will be between Spain and their opponent in the knockout stages and that "this could be their year". There is still that chance, but based on past tournament performances, I think Spain will continue to live up to its softness in knockout matches.

France's performance on this tournament was disgrace, and Italy played just to qualify. If they want to go further, they will have to do better! And without Gattuso & Pirlo...

Fred,

Sorry my man, but we live in different time zones and I very seldom use my compueter at night. Which is a pity, because sometimes I'm not there to exchange messages immdtly after the match.

Not a big problem. Regardless of what all Italy haters may think or say, we won last night and now all the other teams had better watch out.
