Preview: France - Italy

ZÜRICH (SW) - When the groups for the 2008 European Championships were announced, France and Italy surely didn't expect to be in the position they are in now, ahead of their last group match.

After a scoreless draw with Romania and the 4-1 crushing by the Dutch, France need a good result against Italy to have a chance of advancing.

Striker Thierry Henry, who scored France's only goal so far at Euro 2008, says to be hopeful: "Remember the trouble we had in qualifying for the World Cup in that group with the Republic of Ireland and Switzerland.

"It was the same at the World Cup itself and in qualification for the EURO. This team has already suffered a lot."

Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini, who made his Euro debut against Romania, considers the French to be a very strong team:

"From my point of view Franck Ribéry and Thierry Henry are the two most dangerous players. France are a great side and the match on Tuesday will be really tough. I saw their match against the Netherlands and when they were 1-0 down they had a couple of chances to equalise.

"They even had a good penalty shout turned down so they are not as bad as all that. Their result wasn't a fair reflection of the match. They are a side to fear and respect but we'll try to beat them."

The two giants met each other regularly over the past few years. Best known is of course the Italian penalty victory in the 2006 World Cup final.

But a few months later, the French won their Euro 2008 qualifier 3-1. In September 2007, their second qualification meeting went by goalless.

I believe that, should a winner be produced, they will be wearing blue.

Giorgio, do you remember that classic Italian Character always named in jokes, Pierino? When his elementary teacher fell sick, he was waiting for the substitute to replace her. Pierino, hoping to get a good looking one, said that famous phrase: "Che Dio ce la mandi buona!" Well, tomorrow in the game agaist France, I will say the same thing "Che Dio ce la mandi buona!" Hopefully it's going to be a good one. If not, turn off your computer because if you're like me you do not want to read the comments of our enemies!

bisogna saper perdere

bisogna saper perdere

non sempre si puo' vincere

come vuoi e quando vuoi

Does this ring a bell? Lucio Dalla and the Rokes, San Remo, late sixties?

Great song, great lyrics. Nothing to add or take away.

Ajax 72, very good, wery good indeed! Do you fathom the meaning of what you just quoted or it's just recitation and memorization? Yes, you need to know how to lose, but it's better to know how to win! If you understand what you just said, why are you so adamant against Italy? Where you not treated well in my native land?

Correction: were you not treated well in my native country?

Fred,

Win or lose, we'll be back on this web-site. I hope Italy play a great game of soccer.

Yeah man stick to this place. Without you and your friends it'll loose its flavour. And this time I'm not joking.

Ajax72,

Well, so Bulgarians do have a heart, and a brain, after all. That was very decent of you to say something like that.

Fred and I would never dream of leaving Soccerway; after all, it's two very fine Italian boys that keep you turkeys on your toes all the time.

Well, that's what this place is for after all.
