Quick Report: Italy 1-1 Romania

Jonathan Roorda - 13 June 2008 20:15

Adrian Mutu

ZÜRICH (SW) - Italy and Romania held each other to a 1-1 draw in their second Euro 2008 Group B clash.

Italy should have taken the lead just before the break when a legitimate goal from Luca Toni was disallowed by referee Ovrebo.

Romania eventually broke the deadlock after 55 minutes, with Mutu taking advantage of bad defense and striking past Buffon.

But only a minute later, it was Cristian Panucci to level the score from close range after a Chiellini corner.

With ten minutes to go, Romania were handed a spot kick as Panucci pulled down Niculae, but Adrian Mutu's attempt was blocked by goalkeeper Buffon.

Italy did not win but they played well today. We must do it against France . . again!

France will beat the Italians and advance to the next round.

It's obvious that Italy hasn't recovered mentally from the sound thrashing the dutch gave them. They looked a bit better today but it was only because they were playing Romania. The true test will be against France.

I can tell that you guys were looking for Italy to lose. In that case, you must have been disappointed by the result! Better luck next time.

I want Italy to play the final game against Holland.

The Italians will beat France in their next game. I think we will be more focus in that game. I will not depend on Holland to beat both France and Romania, then for us to draw with France to go through. We want the victory in the next game and we will get it.

Khalil, thanks for your support. It's nice to hear a Jamaican cheer for Italy. If it means anything to you, in Canada I had a good Jamaican friend by the name of Rudolf Wilson, a very good guy!

I can't understnd what the fuss is all about. Italy played well and they had a legit goal disallowed in the first half.

Now we'll see whether the Dutch will do the sporting thing, against Romania, or if they want to be unsporting, like Sweden and Denmark were 4 years ago.

(To ajax72): Italy and Holland can't play in the finals, so don't hold your breath :)

And Giorgio, it's a little laim that you already look ahead that Dutch won't play fair. If Romania wins i don't think either Italians or French will ever admit it was fair because you can't believe that it's possible that you were both crushed by Holland and Romania beat them fair. I think it is possible. You had your chance and you blew it. It's not their fault that you couldn't score from so many oportunities.

Assman,

You are right, if Romania win, then what happens between Italy and France will be purely academic. However, first Romania needs to win.

And at the same time, I haven't forgotten what happened between Sweden and Portugal 4 years ago. These 2 teams found it so convenient to play for a 2-2 draw.

Sorry, what I meant is "what happened between Sweden and Denmark, in Portugal 4 years ago".

It all depends on what Holland will decide suits better its interest. It could be they'll preffer letting Italy or France going on. But it's all in the hands of the dutch. I personally preffer to see Italy beaten once again by the dutch. They can only benefit from playing against the Masters of the game. LOL

The masters of the game are those teams that win trophies, not those who play entertaining football but not win,,,,,masters of the game are "Germany, France, Italy, Brazil and Argentina"
