Quick Report: Croatia 2-1 Germany

Jonathan Roorda - 12 June 2008 20:15

Dario Srna scored the opening goal

KLAGENFURT (SW) - Croatia have won their second match at Euro 2008, against tournament favorites Germany. Bilic' men achieved an impressive 2-1 result.

Dario Srna opened the score from close range in the 24th minute, and the Germans lacked the inspiration to do something back in the remainder of the first half.

And just after the hour mark, Lehmann deflected a cross onto the post and the ball ended up in front of Ivica Olic who easily doubled Croatia's lead.

Lukas Podolski struck home in the 79th minute to bring back some hope but the Croatians remained calm and avoided further chances.

Substitute Bastian Schweinsteiger became the first player to be red-carded at this tournament after pushing Leko in stoppage time.

Arguably the most lacklustre german team I remember, which is since 1966.

Great win for my Dalmatian friends! Unlike the Roman emperors going to Dalmatia to relax. Cratia went North to play soccer!

correction: Croatia not Cratia!

The Croats outplayed the Germans last night. And I must say that Croatian players are all of a very high technical level.

This Croatian team plays great soccer and they could aspire to win Euro 2008. The problem is, they are not consistent.

Hey Fred,

Your Dalmatian friends ? Which part of Italy are you from ? Are from Istria, or Dalmatia ?

Please let me know, it could be that we both originate from the same neck of the woods.

Giorgio, if i'm not mistaken, I believe I told you that i'm from Pescara which is situared on the west coast of the Adriatic, the opposite side of Cratia and Montenegro. At the time of the Roman empire that reagion was called Dalmatia. It used to be a resort area for the Roman nobolty. I, being of noble descent (from my mother's side), still have very distant relatives in both Croatia and Montenegro. My family has also had 4 Popes! Please, don't asl me for money because given my expensive vices I find myself in dire straight! PS. I believe you're from Grosseto, correct?

Fred,

Yes, you did tell me once before that you are from Pescara.

I was born in Monfalcone (Go), near Trieste.

Giorgio, I thought you said Grosseto. In any case, Grosseto or Monfalcone is close enough! Do you speak slavic? I must admit that I'm not very confident about today's game against another one of our brotherly nations, Roma-mia!

Croatia have a chemistry which can break down any defensive team, such as Germany and Italy. I cannot predict if Croatia will win EURO 2008 because of how they did look in Austria's game. I will have to see how consistent they are.
