Preview: Italy - Romania

Italy manager Roberto Donadoni

ZÜRICH (SW) - After being crushed by the Netherlands in their opening match, world champions Italy won't be happy with anything less than victory against Romania.

Italy manager Donadoni is aware of the situation and changed his squad in no less than seven positions ahead of the second match.

One of those changes seems to be the addition of Fabio Grosso to the starting line-up. The defender, who scored that important goal against Germany in the semi finals of the World Cup two years ago, proved to be one of the more motivated players against the Dutch.

Grosso stresses that Italy still have a chance to advance from this 'Group of Death': "I consider myself a squad player and all 23 of us are pulling together to try and achieve the same goal. We must all prove that we're in form.

"The strength of this side has always been our team spirit and our squad mentality. Whether we win, lose or draw we're all in it together and against Romania we will do our best to prove how united we still are and show that we are good enough to win."

Romania, who held France to a goalless draw in their opening match on Sunday, will aim to take advantage of the dented confidence of the Italians.

But midfielder Razvan Cocis refuses to underestimate the Azzurri: "Italy will be hurt after losing so heavily. They are world champions so we will have to be careful."

The Romanians will probably be without Ciprian Marica. The striker suffered a concussion in training and was ordered to rest for a couple of days.

Italy and Romania last met in the qualification for the 2002 World Cup, in which Italy won both matches rather easily. Romania last beat the Italians in a Euro 84 qualification match.

Tom Henning Ovrebo will be the referee for this match. The Norwegian is assisted by Geir Age Holen and Jan Petter Randen as linesmen and Croatian Ivan Bebek as fourth official.

Well! You can't always be right! But if you can be right 2 out of 10 then you're really good!

I don't believe Italy will go all out. Even a draw still leaves them a chance to go on. So they'll behave their usual self - Italy v Romania 2-0.

Goalies may not agree with me, but I believe that they have developed a futile trend by trying to guess which way a penalty kick would go. They dive helplessly left and right without any idea of what they are doing. If Even though today was not case during Austria-Poland, yet if they stayed put in the middle of the net they would save more goals than they would allow, for many penalty kicks go in in the middle! I do not know who initiated that futile trend, but whoever he was, he did not think straight. You may also disagree with me, but I sincerely believe that I'm right!

Correction from above! Goalies may not agree with me, but I believe that they have developed a futile habit of trying to guess which way a penalty kick would go. They dive helplessly left and right without any idea of what they are doing. In order to avoid being scorned and derided again, this time I'm picking Romania to win today's game. I would rather take the heat from my Italian brothers (who may scold me but they know I'm happy if Italy wins) than from those around the world who bash my native land, the land of the World Champion.

Fear? No, just precaution!

Fred,

My personal feeling is that it's better to lose (or get knocked out of the competition) early; it hurts too much to lose in a final.

Having said that, Forza Azzurri !!!!

C'mon guys cheer up! Where's your fighting spirit? You give up way too easy. You lost to Holland, who's the best team in Europe ATM, after all. We beated and drew against Romania and we aren't world champions. I'd hate to see Italy dropping out of the Euro so early . I hope Holland will beat them in the final. LOL.
