Quick Report: Czech Republic 1-3 Portugal

Jonathan Roorda - 11 June 2008 20:14

Portuguese fans

GENEVA (SW) - Portugal have a very good chance of advancing to the next round after a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic on Wednesday.

Playmaker Deco scored the opening goal for Scolari's team after just eight minutes, but a header from Libor Sionko levelled the score nine minutes later.

From here on, the two teams were practically equal but it was Portugal to be the happier side at full time as Cristiano Ronaldo struck home from outside the penalty area in the 63rd minute and allowed substitute Quaresma to net his side's third in stoppage time.

If Switzerland and Turkey draw their match later on Wednesday, Portugal are already certain of a spot in the next round.

The Czechs meanwhile, have to achieve a good result against Turkey on Sunday to earn their quarter final berth.

Note: If Turkey wins against Switzerland, then Portugal are also through.

The only scenario that raises the possibility of Portugal not qualifying (unlikely, but possible) is if Switzerland beats Turkey (followed by Switzerland beating Portugal *and* the Czechs beating Turkey *and* the goal differential working against Portugal).

Soccer can be such an unfair and cruel game.

Last night, for most of the match, the Czechs taught the Portuguese a lesson on how soccer is played. And yet, at the end of the day, Portugal won 3-1.

What a sick joke !!!!

What game were you watching? Portugal dominated the game. More shots more possession, etc. The is not one facet of the game where the Czechs were better. Look at the stats:

Czech Republic Portugal

1 Goals scored 3

1 Yellow card 1

0 Red card 0

2 Shots on goal 11

7 Shots wide 4

16 Fouls committed 15

6 Corners 6

0 Offsides 3

23' 51'' Ball. Poss. (time) 34' 50''

40% Ball. Poss. (%) 60%

The statistics don't take into account the amount of chances a team created. True, the Portuguese had more possession, more shots, etc. But if you watched that game, Portugal had significant difficulty dealing with crosses and set pieces defensively. I personally thought that the Czechs created more dangerous chances than the Portuguese. Several times the ball flashed across the open goal, yet no Czech was able to turn it in. Portugal finished their few chances, while the Czechs got painfully close on at least 5 of their many chances. If the Czechs would have finished all of their chances, the score could have been 4-2 (the last goal was a brilliant counterrattack in the dying minutes, but likely wouldn't have happened had the Czechs scored on their chances earlier). But it all came down to the fact that Portugal finished their chances and the Czechs did not, and that's why Portugal won by a disproportionate scoreline in an otherwise even game.

The Czechs only came to life when they were down, when the game was tied they were content in defending and not attacking. When Portugal was leading preserving the lead was the 1st concern not attacking. Despite being either tied or losing throughout the entire game and only have ball for 40% of the time is not an indication of an even match. They had a total of 9 shots compared with 15 for Portugal, so you can't say they had more opportunities, although not show in the stats I looked at I wonder how many saves each goalie had, I also would have liked to see a stat showing where the game was played most of the time, my guess is 75% on the Czech side. I wonder what the score would have been if Portugal finished all of their chances also, you can't look at it one sided and say Czechs score on all their opportunities and Portugal doesn't score on all their opportunities and on top of that you take a goal away. Stop looking at the game though emotion and start looking at cold hard facts of the game.

Portugal dominated the scoreline. They finished their chances, and the Czechs did not. Portugal had many shots, but more of their shots were saved by Petr Cech. The Czechs had many chances and half-chances, but they aren't recorded in the statistics. For instance: a cross comes into the Portuguese penalty area. A Czech player meets the end of it wide and heads it back into the middle. Baros flashes by, but misses the ball, and Carvalho blasts it 65 yards up the field to safety. So, Baros had a chance on goal, but missed. It is no different than Ronaldo unleashing a screamer and having Cech make a fine save. Both are chances, but only the shot is recorded in the statistics, because the chance that Baros missed was not put on goal...but it was close.

Perception of a domination of a game also comes from a squad's preferred style of play, as well. Portugal is a possession side. They pass crisply and frequently, probing the defense for inside runs or quick combinations to open a quick shot. They executed both to success (Deco and Ronaldo goals). The Czechs prefer to play more directly, using the wings to work the ball down the field and cross into the middle for a striker. So, it looked as if the Portuguese dominated the match to those who value possession and crisp passing, because that is the byproduct of the way they play. They force a team to collapse defensively for relatively large portions of a match and defend against the plethora of passes they make. Some Czechs will probably say that they dominated the match because they got several dangerous crosses in that were dealt with haphazardly (though effectively) by the Portuguese defense. I personally saw an even game, as a whole, with the exception being Portugal scoring more goals than the Czechs...that's a pretty cold, hard fact.
