NEUCHATEL, Switzerland (AFP) - Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari described Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy on Tuesday as the "King of Off-side" insisting the Real Madrid forward's controversial goal against Italy was off-side.

Van Nistelrooy's opening goal for Holland in their 3-0 trouncing of world champions Italy in Monday's Euro 2008 Group C match was legal despite a clear offside said European football's governing body UEFA on Tuesday.

But Scolari disagreed with UEFA's ruling, saying the goal should not have been allowed, and said van Nistelrooy is an expert at pushing defences to the limits.

"He is the king of Off-side and is the best player in the world at beating the off-side trap," said Scolari at Portugal's Euro 2008 base here on Tuesday.

"To allow the goal creates confusion amongst the players, it was not valid, it shouldn't have been allowed."

But UEFA's secretary-general David Taylor said that even though van Nistelrooy was clearly offside the fact Italian defender Christian Panucci was behind the goalline without seeking permission from the officials placed the goalscorer onside.

David Taylor is trying to find an excuse for a clear referee mistake, it's just a clear off-side situation. however that will not reduce the value of what Netherlands introduced in the match.

Rules are crystal clear: if a player is outside the pitch without been given permission by the ref he is considered ON the pitch. In this particular case - on the goal line. Period. It's amaizing how professionals don't know the rules regulating what they live on.

I just watched the goal again (and again). You can tell that Panucci collided with Buffon and was sent outside the field. He did not "step out" and of course could not ask for the referee's permission under those circumstances. The rule was created to protect the game from cheap defending tactics (voluntarily getting out of the pitch and creating a false "offside"). The goal was credited based on a wrong judgement from the ref. Period.

It's Euro 2008, the biggest national tournament in Europe. If Panucci was too lazy to get up and have the physio mend his wounds somewhere else along the middle of the field. None of this would've happen.

If you're a footballer yourself, you would definitely agree with the goal - in real competition, there's no room for silly mistakes and IMHO Panucci was just acting too fragile, so he was punished.

Scolari is right, Van Nistelrooy was clearly off-side and the goal shouldn't have been allowed.

Panucci had been knocked down by Buffon, in a play incident, and he was still trying to get up when the goal was scored.

UEFA will, of course, back the referee and confirm his decision, but in this case UEFA was wrong.

aimforthehighest what game were you watching??? I don't know if you were being sarcastic or not in the first part of your comment but it's stupid either way...

Also, if panucci had gotten hurt inside the field, i think it would be better if he was to move himself outside the field so he doesn't interrupt the play...IMHP your opinion sucks

OK, that's enough! Offside or not. Holland beat Italy soundly. I hate to say it but it's ther truth!

It's alright, I can take some bitching from a kid named "darkfox" - totally cool. But goals are goals, so hey... who's whining now? : - )
