Preview: Switzerland - Turkey

Jonathan Roorda - 10 June 2008 15:02

Swiss coach Jakob Kuhn will hope for a better result on Wednesday

BASEL (SW) - Both Euro 2008 co-hosts Switzerland and Wednesday's opponents Turkey face a tough task after losing their opening matches on the tournament's first day.

The Swiss were downed 1-0 by the Czech Republic and, possibly worse, lost star player Alexander Frei due to a serious injury.

It seems likely that Frei will be replaced by Hakan Yakin, who spearheaded the Swiss attack after Frei suffered the unfortunate injury.

Tranquillo Barnetta is still confident though and hopes for the best: "We're not thinking it might already be over for us, We aren't afraid."

Turkey will have to consider serious changes ahead of the disappointing 2-0 defeat by Portugal. Striker Servet Cetin and Gokhan Zan seem to be the most likely candidates to make way for reserve forwards Emre Asik and Emre Gungor.

The Turks did win most of their past encounters with Switzerland, but the Swiss kept Turkey out of the most recent World Cup beating them on aggregate in the qualifying play-offs.

Played at 20:45 local time in Basel, Switzerland, the match will be led by referee Lubos Michel of Slovakia, linesmen Roman Slysko and Martin Balko and fourth official Damir Skomina.

I thought after their playoff fireworks; Turkey would be booed last game, but it was close to a home game with fan support for them. Hope the Best Team Wins!

i m still hopefully. Some players like Emre, Sanli, Erdinc will be replaced with Turan, Topal and Sentürk. It would be positive effect after questionable performance against Portugal .

This is a match that could go either way, but Swiss has the home advantage and seems to be more like a team than Turkey. We will understand better if Turkey is bad, or if Portugal made them look bad. But I am concerned for Turkey. Turkey changes it's squad too much. It's difficult to have consistency and team play with this much changes. This problem is beyond being a problem of injuries. I think since the last few years noone can really name the first eleven of Turkey That is not a good sign. Wİth Emre out now, Yıldıray will definately be missed. Despite a loss againts the Czechs, I think Swiss is better prepared than the turkish side. Turks may have chances with individual efforts from Nihat and Arda. But I don't really think they will be able to play like a team. I think this is a match in which we will be impressed once again by Inler and Behrami from Suisse. Suisse will exploit Turkey's weaknesses in dead ball situations. If Tümer plays, he might have an unexpected impact with his technical skills. Also Gökdeniz could prove valuable if he plays, again because of his technical skills. I am not sure though how Arda would perfom if he plays. He is a bit aggressive in big matches and this could make him a bit too nervous and therefore result in wrong decisions on the pitch (including stupid yellow cards)
