FIFA suspend Ethiopian FA

Jonathan Roorda - 29 July 2008 14:27

FIFA president Sepp Blatter

ZÜRICH (SW) - World governing body FIFA announced today that the Ethiopian Football Federation has been suspended, after failing to normalize the association's situation.

The Ethiopian federation (EFF) agreed in February this year to follow a road map in order to improve the organisation's structure.

Included in this road map was the organisation of an 'extraordinary general assembly to deal with the motion of dismissal'. EFF offices were also to be handed over to the recognized leadership of the association.

As the EFF failed to cooperate, FIFA announced the suspension in an official release today.

Ethiopia are currently third in Group 8 of round 2 in the African World Cup qualifiers, and play their next match against Morocco on September 5th.

Another year, another African country suspended by FIFA. Honestly, I wish I could say this shocks me, but it doesn't.

They had no other option. Ethiopia are in a football mess.

First a large number of nations in Africa need to stabilize...then we can worry about football.

Honestly didn't know they compete at international level. With the ordeal they've been through recently.

DaJohnner, for once I agree with you! You may not agree with me if I were to say that most African nations have been enslaved and exploited by European powers, particularly by England, much like the American Indians have been. It will take time to recover but they will!

I think it was the right decission that Ethopia has been suspendet. As DaJohnner said, more than one country has to be stabilized but that`s unfortunately very difficult for such countries. You also see some of these problems in South Africa! Think about it.

Sorry for bad english

Skoppe, very well done! Don't worry about your English because most English people cannot spell their own language correctly. English is not a phonetic language like Italian is. In Italian there is no need to spell any words, for they sound like they are written!

skoppe, welcome aboard. Important thing is to speak your mind. Oh, I was going to forget it: be very kind to the italian players and teams. LOL. Our doyen here, Tonto, is quite permissive, but still to a certain degree.

I don't think a subject on Ethiopia is one where Italians should be moralizing on the American Indian. I'll leave it at that. Soccerway should start deleting offtopic posts.

Tonto, for once I'll disagree with you- AmericanIndians have not been exploited by the whites, they were simply wiped out by them.

Horn of Africa has seen it's problems in football, not long ago, Kenya was suspended for a time. With all due respect, in general, the greatest cross country and marathoners come from Ethiopia and Kenya along with some other fine runners from Somalia and Eritrea, all in the Horn of Africa, but for African football power, it is in the west, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Senegal, Togo, DR Congo and to the South, obviously, Angola and South Africa have played some good ball. The horn does compete but it is often far and few in between. Ethiopia went to a World Cup a long time ago because they were one of the few developed African countries that could.

I believe even the Sudan FA had some trouble in their standing. Sudan is situated in the middle of a lot of those countries and is rather big. Heck, as far as I'm concerned, if there are international sanctions because of things going on, they don't belong in these tournaments or qualifications either.

If you want to sling mud ajax: it's not like Holland and Italy were faultless in the genocides of world war Ii.

RGPII1, was it you who suggested that Soccerway should delete off-topics? I only posted one, but you posted 4 or 5. BTW, your lack of knowledge of history was evident when you failed to take advantage of the fact that Ethiopia was exploited by Italy. That should have been your smart reply, but in posting my first comment, I was banking on your ignorance of world events!

Fred, you are correct in your knowledge of African colonisation being of European influence other than it wasn't, as you stated, "particularly Britain". During the "Scramble for Africa", France's influence was nearly at a par with the British in their claim to ownership of territories!

"Exploited by Italy" : Ok, let's get on topic for Tontadoni's sake, Italy used poisonous gas in Ethiopia, Italy committed war crimes in Ethiopia, before that Ethiopia was never colonized by any European power.

Italy helped Nazi Germany in there genocides of World War II.

Sorry, Tontadoni, my topics were on-topic, Horn of Africa- check, Quality of play in the Horn of Africa (Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea and some of Sudan)- Check, Ethiopia and Kenya being better at long distance running than soccer-Check. If being ignorant is not putting other countries down in unrelated statements, so be it. I don't think anyone missed anything at all displaying ignorance, when the said quote "I don't think an article on Ethiopia is one where Italians should be moralizing" recognizes past Italian occupation; because I know for a matter of fact, that Eritrea were somewhat allied with Italy in that invasion, that in Eritrea, one still finds many landmarks of when Italy was there. I guess if not putting down other people equates to ignorance, count me in.

People...this is a forum on football. If you want to attack other countries or their actions outside of football matches, please leave. We don't need a war of words about whose country committed more atrocities or who had more of Africa under colonial control.

Let's just stick to the football and discuss events related to the Beautiful Game.
