Claudio Reyna ends career

17 July 2008 14:50

NEW YORK (SW) - Midfielder Claudio Reyna has ended his career. This was announced by the American, who spent the last one and a half year playing in his home country.

Reyna said that he wants to avoid becoming one of those players that continue for too long.

The player has spent most of his career in Europe, starting at Bayer Leverkusen in 1994. After VfL Wolfsburg, Glasgow Rangers, Sunderland and Manchester City, he returned to his home country to join the New York Red bulls.

The now 34-year-old represented the United States national team in no less than 112 occasions, in which he scored eight goals.

Reyna was selected for the last four World Cups, but did not play at the 1994 tournament in his home country as result of an injury.

In 2002, he became the first American to form part of a World Cup all-tournament team and four years later he had worked his way up to team captain.

The player also played for the US Under-23 side at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics.
