Inter teen star ready to commit to Italy

Inter Milan´s teenage sensation Mario Balotelli, seen here in April 2008, told La Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday that his first call up to Italy colours cannot come soon enough.

ROME (AFP) - Italian champions Inter Milan's teenage sensation Mario Balotelli told La Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday that his first call up to Italy colours cannot come soon enough.

The 17-year-old striker - who was born to Ghanaian parents - will celebrate his 18th birthday on August 12 and with it receive his first Italian passport that should signal the start of his international career.

"I've been waiting for years for this August 12 and becoming an Italian citizen because I am Italian," he told the paper.

Despite being born in Sicily and adopted and brought up by Italian parents, the fact his blood parents were Ghanaian has meant he has had to wait till turning 18 before he could become a full Italian national.

Balotelli has long been seen as a future international and has turned down numerous requests by the Ghanaian FA to represent his birth-parents country, including the 2008 African Nations Cup in Ghana.

Instead he established himself in the Inter first team squad, where his pace and power troubled defences and allowed him to score seven times.

Soon it will be international defences that he will hope to make suffer and no doubt he will use some of the pent-up frustration he feels at having to wait for his chance in a blue shirt.

"Italy is where I was born, where I studied and where I play football," he said.

"My language is Italian and my family is Italian. It is only because of some absurd law that I have had to live for 18 years as a foreigner in my own country."

Bes TalentScout, what's your problem? With a name like Mario Balotelli, and born in Italy, why should he not play for the Azzurri? If this guy is as good as they say he is, we are going to win the WC in 2010.

PS. I'm color-blind. Tell me what color Mario is!

Well, half of a French squad has African origins and not to mention what kind of people the US nation is made of, 'cause it would take some time! So why wouldn't this guy, born in Italy play for Italy?

He was born in Italy, raised in Italy, and thinks of himself as Italian. If that doesn't qualify him to be an Italian, I don't know what does.

Here are some tips I'd like to pass on to this kid before he plays for his country: be respectful to your opponents. Don't spit on them and certainly never call their sisters whores.

Crusader, your advice may have come too late. Mario has already learned the tricks from his teammate, Marco Materazzi

dudishmon, I'm Italian and I was the first one to wish Mario well. Italy is not Spain and Marcello Lippi is not Aragones. Do you remember what your ex national coach was accused of? To a good listener few words are needed!

He's ghanaian and will remain such untill his last day no matter how he feels and what he wants. Blood and genes are God given and there's nothing that can be done. As for the passport -it's his choice.

Ajax72, If it's true that God gave us different genes, it's also true that He gave us different brains. Would you disagree?
