Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo, seen here in June 2008, has had

MANCHESTER, England (AFP) - Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo has had "successful" surgery on his ankle in Amsterdam, the club confirmed in a statement on Monday.

"Initial indications are that the procedure was successful," United said after the Portuguese star went under the knife in an op which could see the 23-year-old miss the start of the new season.

"Cristiano will begin his convalescence under the direction of club medical staff and an estimation of his return to full fitness will be possible following review by the specialist in one month," United said in their statement.

Earlier, Johan Kortenray, press spokesman at the Amsterdam hospital where the striker is being treated, indicated that Ronaldo would likely be allowed to go home on Tuesday.

The operation, carried out by renowned Dutch orthopaedic surgeon Niek van Dijk, was arranged after the view of a specialist backed up that of medical staff from both Manchester United and the Portuguese Football Association that it was required.

Portuguese sports newspaper A Bola earlier indicated that two fragments of cartilage have floated free, causing recurrent inflammation.

Ronaldo, a target for Real Madrid - though the Spanish club say they expect him to stay at Old Trafford at least for next season - revealed following Portugal's Euro 2008 exit that he had been suffering from the injury for some time.

Very good! Now he can have a successful career working for Sao Paulo dept of public works. A few days repairing the run-down garbage dumps around the city will teach him the reality of life!

Best Talent Scout: How low can you go Mr. Low, regardless of the fact that Ronaldo thinks that the only thing as good looking as him is his own reflection, to wish a career ending injury on any player is discraceful. Only a formula one fan would consider adding such a comment, Fottball fans, check out Bestalentscouts profile! what is he doing on a football forum???

Newtonheath1878,

Take it easy !!!! I am both, a soccer fan and a F1 fan, and I do not appreciate your comments.

So what are you doing on a football forum ????

Giorgio, with due respect, have you seen Bestalentscouts profile, there is no interest in football whatsoever. The bloke post's pure drivle all the time. Giorgio, what's with the "soccer" term. Are you or are you not a Rossoneri, if so you should know better. Come on Giorgio are you a football fan or what.

United till I die!!!!

Newtonheath1878,

No offense taken. And at the same time there's no need for any of us to get hot under the collar. I think we all post comments and get together on this blog because we all love the most beautiful game in the world. And sometimes we taunt each other, because, in this context, it becomes inevitable.

TalentScout goes to extremes, sometimes, but I am inclined to believe that he doesn't mean any harm.

Of course, if he, or anyone else for that matter, should step out line, there's a whole bunch of us to remind him.

And, as evidenced in the logo, I'm an Inter fan (but I also love Milan).

Giorgio

I don't live in America and I'm not at all familiar with your song. So, please, share your song with all of us here on Soccerway !!!!

Giorgio, you got me confused. All along I thought you were a Milanista. Now I learn you are an Interista. Please for my benefit, would you like to come clean? But you are right, we do not mean to offend anyone/ We are just having fun taunting each others!

Giorgio

Fred,

I'm an Inter fan but I love both, Inter and Milan.

So maybe I should swap logo on a weekly basis, one week Inter and one week Milan. I think I'll start next week Monday.

Giorgio, I never mean to upset anyone but others seem to let wicked words roll off their tongues far too easily. I was a little confused with your badge as your profile states that you an AC fan. By the way Chakal's song goes like this, " Georgio and Talentscout sitting on a tree K.I.S.S.I.N.G." Very lame Chakal!

Newtonheath1878,

Just by the way, where did get this name ? Please enlighten us !!!

As far as I am aware, TalentScout is a guy who likes to talk about farting a lot !!

However, if he was some hot chick, then kissing (or anything else of an acrobatic nature) on the tree would be great !!!

Hey TalentScout, tell this ass-hole Chakal that, when you're not farting, you actually like the girls !!!!!!

Giorgio, if you are refering to where the name newtonheath1878 comes from. It derives from the original name of Manchester united " Newton Heath Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Football Club" founded in 1878. Newton Heath is a medium sized urban area in the city of Manchester where I was born. Giorgio, check this link if you are interested in a history lesson on the greatest football team in the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_United_F.C.

Newtonheath1878,

ManU the greatest football team in the world ? Now I think you are exaggerating !!! For your information, AC Milan is the greatest soccer team in the world !!!

newtonheath1878

10 July 2008 12:10

Giorgio, you are a funny man, AC are great but not the greatest. I do like AC though, they even use our emblem as one of their nicknames "il Diavolo". The best and the greatest are always copied.

Giorgio

10 July 2008 13:41

Newtonheath1878,

It takes one funny man to recognise another !!!

And I did check your wikipedia link. Not bad, but the Milan website is better.

And AC Milan's nickname is indeed "Il Diavolo", which, as you already know, means The Devil. This is an "original" nickname, which was never copied from any other club !!
