Spain fans celebrating

ZÜRICH (SW) - Spain are the new leaders of the FIFA World Ranking after their successful European Championships campaign. Previous leaders Argentina drop to sixth place.

The Spanish began Euro 2008 in fourth place and gained another 254 points, enough to surpass Argentina, Brazil and Italy and take the top spot.

Italy, who reached the quarter finals at Euro 2008, move up one spot into second place and Germany climb two spots to third place.

Biggest climbers in the top ten are the Netherlands, from tenth to fifth place, and Croatia who went from fifteenth to seventh place.

What a joke!!! Italia should be on top!!! We are the WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!!! Euro was just a training session for winning the next world cup with Marcello Lippi at the helm!!!

i can understand spain shouldn't be no. 1, but what i can't understand germany in no2. over Argentina and Brazil.

relax folks... big tournaments probably carry more points. So Euro 2008 gave a boost to those teams that went further. Once World Cup qualifying starts, everything will start shifting again. Its only a points system - it's not meant to reflect our national allegiances and favourite teams. So you Italians can chill out and Sajnshe - you must be Egyptian! there's NO WAY!
