LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Sami Hyypia has called on his Liverpool team-mates to stop relying on Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard for goals ahead of Tuesday's FA Cup third round replay with Luton Town at Anfield.

The pair have scored 18 of the club's 35 Premier League goals between them this season with Torres yet again finding the net last Saturday to rescue Rafael Benitez's team from defeat at Middlesbrough.

Whilst delighted by the duo's good form, Finland international defender Hyypia said it was time for other players to chip in.

Dirk Kuyt has managed just one league goal since October while Ukrainian striker Andriy Voronin has scored four since his pre-season arrival from German side Bayer Leverkusen.

"We can't keep relying on Torres and Stevie (Gerrard) to score all the goals," said Hyypia.

"We need to be firing on all cylinders. It always comes down Fernando and Stevie and we need to score goals from more areas. We had some chances at corners against Middlesbrough. I had one and missed it."

Benitez is expected to field his strongest available side against Luton as pressure continues to mount on the Liverpool manager.

His long-term future at Anfield remains uncertain after falling out with the club's owners earlier in the season while the team's current form has tested the patience of even the most loyal Liverpool fan.

With his side 12 points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester United after drawing the last three top-flight games, Benitez desperately needs a decent run in the FA Cup and defeat to a Luton side two divisions below Liverpool is unthinkable.

Hyypia, seeking his third FA Cup winners' medal after helping Liverpool win the competition in 2001 and 2006, said the players must not allow the off-field speculation surrounding Benitez to spill over on to the pitch.

"Our job is to focus on the games," added Hyypia. "It's not our business and should not affect us in any way. We have to continue concentrating on the games, that's our job.

"In the football world there are some things that happen very quickly and you can't do anything about them.

"The players hope that if there are some arguments that they can be sorted out. We seem to be becoming like Newcastle. Every time we pick up a paper, there seems to be something new."

Despite holding Liverpool to a creditable 1-1 draw last week, Luton will have to produce one of the biggest upsets in the history of the FA Cup if they are to reach the fourth round.

The cash-strapped club is facing relegation to the fourth tier of English football after having 10 points docked for going into administration.

Since the initial tie at Kenilworth Road, manager Kevin Blackwell has tendered his resignation and will step down in February after becoming frustrated at the sale of several players to raise funds for the club.

A consortium is hoping to provide a rescue package but whether that takeover could be concluded in time to persuade Blackwell to change his mind and stay remains to be seen.

"Managers come and go. Administrators, directors, boards and players they all come and go but a lot of fans can't or don't," said Blackwell.

"We would like to pay particular tribute to ours. It's been a long time since they have had any kind of sequence of good news and they deserve some success and our hope is that it comes in the not too distant future.

"Their support for us during this period of adversity has been astonishing and when we and the players applaud them at the end of the game, it is with the utmost sincerity."
