Huntelaar or Diarra to miss out on Champions League

Lassana Diarra, one of Madrid's new signings

MADRID (SW) - Spanish giants Real Madrid will probably have to leave either Klaas Jan Huntelaar or Lassana Diarra out of their Champions League selection for the knock-out stages.

According to UEFA regulations, each team is entitled to make three changes. However, only one of these three may be a player that previously played in the UEFA Cup for another club in the same season. Huntelaar has already done so for Ajax while Diarra represented Portsmouth in Europe's other club tournament.

Spanish sportspaper Marca claims that Madrid weren't aware of that fact, but the club deny that that is the case and hope to find a loophole that might allow both players to be registered for the tournament.

Currently placed fifth in the Primera Division, Real Madrid are practically forced to make several changes in the January transfer window. Huntelaar's arrival was recently announced and Diarra's deal followed this week. The club announced that more new signings could take place.
