PARIS (AFP) - Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo won the European Footballer of the Year Award here on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old Portuguese star is the first from his country to win the coveted Ballon D'Or award, which is presented by 'France Football' magazine, since Luis Figo in 2000.

His award - which he has widely spoken about having said in the last week that not only is he the best footballer in the world but also the second and third best - comes on the back of exceptional performance for his club side last season.

He scored a remarkable 42 times in 49 matches as United secured a memorable league and European Cup double.

I dont hate him , but I dont like him too . It started maybe after the stupid incident with Rooney , I like english team and I was shocked about Ronaldo's attitude in that game . Ronaldo didn't deserve today's title , he is in constant whining, complaining, provocating .. ....

Agreed - anyone with confidence that they can beat opposition on basis of their own ability wouldn't have to resort to being a weasle to get Rooney sent off. Just like Maradona with his hand of mesiah goal - they can't think that they are that good if they have to rely on cheating. Just turns me off players - especially if they are playing for the opposition !

An excellent choice and good luck to him. Last season he was a joy to watch. Maybe he cannot repeat what he did last season but one must give credit where it is due.

Yeah mate he tried out a hand of god move in the derby match!

Too bad he spent the whole match chirping so the ref gave him what he deserves.

This year he is on his way downhill.
