Wenger demands action against clubs in the red

AFP - 29 August 2008 16:45

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger (seen here on August 23) believes clubs who risk financial meltdown in the pursuit of success should be kicked out of Europe competitions.

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes clubs who risk financial meltdown in the pursuit of success should be kicked out of Europe competitions.

UEFA president Michel Platini has launched a probe into the high level of debt carried by some clubs and claims they are "cheating" by purchasing players they simply cannot afford.

Wenger agrees with his fellow Frenchman's assessment and, while he didn't name individual clubs, he clearly had Manchester United and Chelsea - who have a combined debt of 1.5 billion pounds between them - in his sights as he demanded harsh penalties from UEFA.

"I think teams who have deficits should be kicked out of Europe," Wenger said.

"The only way to go is that there is a control over all of Europe and I think it will go that way whether you like it or not.

"UEFA will bring in a control of the management of every individual club and every individual club will be controlled.

"It is very important for the fans of the competition first, and it is very important that every club lives with the resources they have available - clubs should not speculate and then after one year they cannot pay the salaries for the next seasons.

"Every transfer nowadays in Europe is paid over two or three years, and it is compulsory that UEFA controls that the commitment of the club is right, because if that does not happen, it can all collapse very quickly."

While Roman Abramovich's millions have allowed Chelsea to buy virtually any player in the world, Wenger has always operated a more frugal transfer policy.

Even now, with Arsenal director Danny Fiszman maintaining that the board would back their manager if he wanted to splash 30 million pounds (37 million euros) on one player, Wenger still shys away from making the kind of big-money buy that Chelsea and United specialise in.

"I buy the players I feel strengthen the squad, after that I consider the price," he said.

"I do the job I think it has to be done, considering the resources of the club and considering our ambition, and the players we have.

"I know the media and supporters sometimes too are happy with big numbers, but for me what is most important is big quality. Sometimes both are linked, but not always."

However Wenger does want another midfielder and a move for either Liverpool's Xabi Alonso or Udinese's Swiss playmaker Gokhan Inler remains possible before Monday's transfer deadline.

"Last year it was at midnight - and we are ready to stay up all night this time if it is needed," he said. "We have still a long time to go.

"For a while they all talk the talk and nothing happens, then in the last four or five days every half-an-hour there is a headline saying someone has signed somewhere.

"When you have experience of transfer dealings, you know that as long as something is not signed you know it can change very quickly so you can look very silly, so you don't want to come out and announce it."

"We are out to look, if we find the right players we will do it, one or two.

"However, I believe it's more interesting for us to focus on our strengths and quality rather than looking outside. I know it makes headlines, but it doesn't make you win games."

Fair point, the richest teams clearly are in England, Italy, Spain and Germany. All or most sports are in some kind of hanky-panky, if it be buying off refs, match fixing, drugs and on and on. The higher the stakes the more of it, generally.

UEFA just realized that clubs shouldn't operate in the red? I could have told you that a while ago. I mean, look what happened to Leeds United.

It's not all black and white. While Wenger's stance is in a way admirable there is also the point that he wants to get those clubs kicked out. With Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United out of CL, he would have a much lighter way to the throne of CL.

As for him not signing, it's because of Arsenal's move to Emirates, he said he sold his players because Arsenal need to have 24 million plus a season to pay for the stadium. Talking about clubs in RED mister Wenger Arsenal aren't clean also.

P.S.: Even if this rule doesn't kick Arsenal out, the 6+5 will since Arsenal virtually have only 1 Englishman (Walcott).

Cile_car, is that the way Partizan and Red Star are with money?

It's similar, sadly. Crvena Zvezda (Red Star as you call it) had a wonderful squad some years ago, had a decent game with Milan in a CL qualifier. But those 2 clubs are sadly a selling club, they sold players like Žigić for little money and then those player's prices suddenly become double that or more. Last time I was really dissapointed was when Segundo Castillo joined Everton (although I like them).

It's very much the same in all Balkan countries, even Croatian clubs need to sell (Dinamo --> Eduardo, Modrić, Kranjčar) although they seem to be richer than others.

It's sad how low it went, considering how well those clubs did in the nineties (Zvezda winning European Cup). If it weren't for the war, maybe it'd be better but that's just a maybe.

Although his reasons of such strong support of this idea are clearly to help him and Arsenal win a CL crown, he does make perfect sense. For years, lesser clubs (financially) have been "forcced" to sell off their young acquisitions and academy youth, in order to stay competitive. I say force teams to stay financially responsible and keep the contracts down...allow advertisers/companies to give athletes the bonus $$$ millions not clubs. If this were the case, Sporting Lisbon would be right up there winning many CL titles with players they developed like Simao Sabrosa, Ricardo Quaresma, Nani, Cristiano Ronaldo, and the likes. Similarily, in Dutch teams, think how good Ajax's lineup could be if they kept all their developed youth. Too difficult for small clubs to compete consistently with the larger clubs. Now many "larger" clubs are struggling as a result to keep up with new signings of others. Simply ridiculous, Interesting to see if the foreigner (6+5) rule will help this ongoing problem. Might be tough with the EU laws allowing people to work all over Europe and with all this dual citizenship bullshit. Hopefully something can get done soon so clubs like, Villareal, Real Betis, Fiorentina, West Ham, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Benfica, Sporting, Torino, Ajax, Celtic, and the like can rreturn and stay competitive in Europe as they once did.

Oh yeah, I also left out Luis Figo from that list of impressive Sporting Lisbon youth academy stars.

Perhaps a revenue sharing system similar to the NFL might be needed to help smaller markets get a fair share of TV revenue wealth and given an opportunity to compete fairly every year as oppose to the odd "Cinderella" story.

DaJohnner, the revenue system you suggested already exists in EPL. That's why clubs like Spurs, West Ham and other teams in England can buy much more than teams from Italy or Spain which don't reach CL. In Spain particularly, most of the money go to Barcelona and Real Madrid, so they can stay top.

As for the clubs you told, it's not only a money issue, you also have to think what a player wants. You have Huntelaar for example, who wants to leave Ajax despite them having the cash to keep him.

About sponsors giving players cash, that would make teams even more vulnerable to possible future Cristiano sagas because then it's the sponsor's say where a player will play not a team's (as you suggested sponsors are the one that pay).

Oh, and Nottingham Forest would hardly return even if the rules were your way. They would first have to get into EPL, but with your rules, by that time there would be too much teams too competitive for them.

Teams are unbalanced all over Europe...not cause they are superior, but because of uneven $$$ flow in many leagues in Europe. England is most competitive, but still very divided.

Some stats to consider the need for power shift in all leagues (so all can compete fairly)

Last 30 yrs of national championships/nation:

EPL: MU=10, LFC=5, ARS=4, CFC=2 (21/30)

SPAIN: RM=14, BARCA=9 (23/30)

ITALY: JUV=11(-1), ACM=9, INTER=5 (25/30)

GER: BM=17, WB, STU, BD, HSV (all)=3 (26/30)

LaLIGUE: LYON=7, ASM=5, OM, NANTES, FCGB= 4 EACH (24/30)

EREDIVISIE: PSV=14, AJAX=12,FEY=3 (29/30)

SPL: GLR=15, CELTIC=11 ABER=3 (29/30)

POR: PORTO=17, BENFICA=8, SCP=4 (29/30)

Turkey:FEN=9,GAL=10,BE=7, TRA=4 (30/30)

same top 4-5 teams for over 30+ yrs, something isnt right. Difference between a dynasty team once in awhile and a monopoly of a few.

Possible Ajax line-up based on players in the starting 11 of their respective actual clubs: vdSar /MU/, Heitinga /Atl M/, Chivu, Maxwell /both Inter M/,Maduro /Valencia/, Nigel de Jong /HSV/, Sneijder, vd Vaart /both RM/, Seedorf /Milan/, Babel /Liverpool/, Ibrahimovich /Inter M/, etc, etc. Not bad,eh? A prime CL contender.

I'm back, for those that care I have been on a superb holiday to recharge my batteries. I have just been looking through the past weeks comments and nothing seems to have changed. Hello Fred if you’re reading. DaJohnner and BesTalent are still talking through their backsides but well done DaJohnner for attempting another language. Ajax have you missed me; I see you still haven’t been able to stay away from the United pages (closet Red). Yes, yawn United were crap on Friday, were a one man team and a meaningless game to entertain the Eurocrats proves that doesn’t it Ajax, I hear it at the start of every season. Does anybody know the Eredivisie results from weekend, I do, do you Ajax?
