Basel join European giants in Champions League

Jonathan Roorda - 28 August 2008 01:47

FC Basel will take part in Thursday's Champions League draw

BASEL (SW) - Switzerland will have its own representative in this year's Champions League, as FC Basel beat Vitoria Guimaraes to survive the third preliminary round.

After a scoreless draw in Portugal, anything was possible for the return leg on Wednesday.

FC Basel opened the score through Stocker after eleven minutes, but Vitoria needed only minutes to reply with a converted penalty kick from Fajardo.

That away goal would have been enough for the Portuguese side to win the tie, but Derdiyok's goal for the Swiss in the 54th minute helped Basel to the group phase while Vitoria get to prepare for a UEFA Cup adventure this season.

Unfortunately one very wrong disallowed goal to Guimarães, at minute 88', is not mentioned. I wonder why.

the officials haven't stole only guimaraes players and fans biggest dream, they also slole them the something like 5M euros for not entering Campions..it's only 3 times their season budget..
