ROME (AFP) - The English Premier League is by far the richest in Europe, according to Italian internet sports business company StageUp.

In a study into the proceeds garnered by the top European leagues the Premier League finished a billion euros ahead of Italy's Serie A in second.

England's top division earns 2.43 billion euros a year, according to StageUp, with Serie A second on 1.43 billion euros.

Surprisingly, though, Germany's Bundesliga was third, just behind Serie A, on 1.42 billion euros with Spain's La Liga (1.35bn) and France's Ligue 1 (1.04bn) rounding out the top five.

However, the company claimed that German teams lead the way in major club sponsorship deals with an average of 6.9 million euros per club while the Germans also have the highest average attendances of 40,000 fans.

This is because the English Premier League is the closest thing you'll find to an American sports league in European soccer. A big TV contract deal, sharing those TV revenues equally with all the teams (unlike in Serie A, where it's every team for itself when it comes to broadcasting), this league understands the economic forces that drive it. get rid of the promotion and relegation system and throw in a postseason championship for the league championship and this looks a lot like the American NFL, the richest pro sports league in the world.

but we're talking about real football here crusader... sure money drives sport these days, but to a large extent the sanctity of the sport has remained intact in Europe. The NFL, despite all its wealth, has still not garnered an international audience and probably never will. The "World Champions" of the NFL will never gain international respect and that is what drives sport more than money!

The irony is that in Europe the big money kills football instead of making it more popular. 30 years ago the european leagues relied on 90+% local players. Now the majority are foreigners, which means that the more the money poured into a league, the less popular the game is among the local kids.

Not to mention Manchester City being owned by an ex-prime minister who bailed out of Thailand with a big bag of cash ! One has to question one's ethics when decided which team to support...

Foreign money...Foreign players...Lucrative TV deals, and grass roots suffering. Rich clubs get richer, the poor continue to dwindle. Sad state of affairs really. They should change the max of 3 internationals per team on the pitch at once, unfortunately, EU kind of screws that up.

that should say, change BACK to the 3 foreigners rule.
