Taylor Twellman of New England Revolution

Gregory Richardson and Jamal Gay scored as Trinidad’s Joe Public upset the New England Revolution 2-1 Tuesday in the preliminary round of the new CONCACAF Champions League.

Richardson got the first goal from about 6 yards in the 51st minute off a cross from Kerry Baptiste. Gay entered in the 69th minute and scored on his first touch, sending a cross from Baptiste past goalkeeper Doug Warren from close range in the 70th.

Municio Castro converted a penalty kick for New England in the 76th minute after Carlyle Mitchell brought down Shalrie Josep.

The return leg in the total-goals series is next Tuesday at Foxborough, Mass. The eight preliminary round winners advance to the 16-team group stage of the tournament, which replaced the CONCACAF Champions Cup. MLS’s Houston Dynamo and D.C. United received automatic berths in the group stage, which opens Sept. 16.

Mexico's Cruz Azul has been routing Hankook (whoever that is just like whoever Joe FC is) 6-0 in this tournament, it looks kind of like a Carling Cup equivalent of an international pro-competition in the Americas and teams like the Rev. must not take it seriously, heck, they were playing on tv just the other day against TFC.

The thing to remember about American sports is that this international competition thing is EXTREMELY (note the emphasis) unusual here when it comes to the club level. There's no Champions League for baseball, basketball, gridiron football, or ice hockey because winning the USA league in those sports (MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL respectively) is the same as being the best team in the world in that sport. Perhaps this mindset crosses over to soccer here. Especially with the Revs, who have a huge monkey to get off their backs when it comes to winning the MLS Cup.

However, all we need is a 1-0 win in Gillette Stadium and we move on to the next round. Lets remember the Revs are in a stretch of playing 11 games in 38 days and that Steve Nicol has to pick and choose what games he'll contest with full strength. I heard that Nicol was doing some scouting of Joe Public during the game, so that tells you which league is really better between the TT Pro League and the MLS.

CONCACAF Champions League, formerly known as CONCACAF Champions Cup, but now with a format more reminiscent of the UEFA Champions League.

And the matchup the Revs have to prepare for is a home game with the LA Galaxy on August 30. Landon Donovan and David Beckham are coming to town...

Crusader, I think the last Olympics proved that the NBA, MLB, etc is not necessarily (albeit sometimes) the best in the world. Granted Team USA pulled it out at this Olympics, I believe South Korea won the baseball gold this year (granted baseball is for amateur athletes). Americans seriously need to get off their high horses and realize that they can't claim the world when they haven't seen what's on the outside. The world doesn't revolve around one country... and I think that will be proven even more harshly in the years to come!

I've got a video of a game in El Salvador at one of the teams' stadiums down there. I mean, I've seen nicer highschool tournaments. I am not knocking poorer and/or smaller countries, but I wonder really, if Mexican League, MLS and even USL types of teams should be going to these kinds of places. I watched a game played in what looked like a darn cowpasture almost I saw in El Salvador. I just don't know if teams like the Revs and such should be doing such faraway travelling for these kinds of games, but if the monetary reward is there, then I guess so.
