Amid hostilities, Georgia moves UEFA Cup match

The UEFA Cup Trophy

NYON, Switzerland (AP)—WIT Georgia will play its UEFA Cup home match against Austria Vienna in Turkey because of recent air and land attacks by Russia.

UEFA said Tuesday that the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium in the capital city of Tbilisi was too dangerous for Thursday’s game amid hostilities between Russia and Georgia.

“Due to political problems in the north of the country, it has been agreed that WIT Georgia will play the home leg of the fixture at the Ataturk Stadium,” UEFA said in a statement.

The Ataturk Stadium is in the Black Sea port city of Rize, 60 miles from the Georgia border. WIT Georgia opted for the stadium after failed efforts to play in neighboring Armenia or Azerbaijan.

The Ataturk Stadium holds 10,500 spectators and is home to Caykur Rizepor, newly relegated to the Turkish second division. The return leg of the second qualifying round will be played in Vienna on Aug. 28.

WIT is the last club from Georgia remaining in UEFA-organized competition this season. Champion Dinamo Tbilisi was knocked out of the Champions League last week by Greek side Panathinaikos.

Dinamo’s German coach Rainer Zobel and six foreign players left Georgia earlier this week to seek safety in Germany.

With the conflict in Georgia worsening, it's possible that no Georgian squads could participate in next year's European competitions. I wish the two sides would come to agreement very soon so that the league and other fixtures can continue and the footballers can return to the field.

Italy is in Georgia's group: once before, I think Italy had reservations about travelling to another country because the country was in conflict as well. Perhaps it was Armenia or Aizerbaijan. But the game is minor in comparison. I don't know exactly what it is about but feel for the innocents caught up: Russia has been bombing. In a way, they seem to be the aggressors but one often can not say.

RGPII1,

I don't know in which instance Italy had reservations about travelling to another country where there was a conflict situation.

Armenia was never in Italy's group and Italy did travel to Azerbajian, without any reservations or problems.

So why did you bring this up ? Don't the other teams in the same group have any reservations about travelling to Geogia ?

You seem to be the expert on the "not to travel to" conflict hot-spots !!!!!

http://www.dfat.gov.au/dept/annual_reports/05_06/performance/2/2.1.html This link and other research on the web indicates that there were travel warnings and advisories issued in 2005/06 about travelling to Azerbaijan. The trouble and danger must have gone down but it was thought about postponing games against Azerbaijan back then.

The team that was considering what would be a proper action at the time, was in fact, Italy at the time because their game was the next one. Perhaps if we are ever in Italy together, we can knock on the door of the FIGC and ask them about it!
