Liverpool beat Lazio in Champions League warm-up

AFP - 9 August 2008 00:30

Liverpool´s French forward David Ngog(R) is challenged by Lazio´s Alessandro Tuia during their pre-season friendly football match in Liverpool. Liverpool won 1-0.

LIVERPOOL, England (AFP) - Liverpool, without injured captain Steven Gerrard, beat Lazio 1-0 at Anfield on Friday in a friendly warm-up for next week's Champions League match with Xabi Alonso in fine form.

Liverpool travel to Belgians Standard Liege for the first leg of the third qualifying round on Wednesday and thigh-strain victim Gerrard at this point looks unlikely to feature.

Liverpool fans chanted Alonso's name constantly during the match and the Spaniard responded with a fine all-action display of passing and running.

Liverpool were crisp and assertive with Alonso pulling the strings in front of a 43,062 crowd.

They made it eight pre-season games unbeaten, the winner coming in injury-time when Andriy Voronin volleyed home from Jay Spearing's pass.

It would seem that English clubs are having a field day against Italian clubs in "warm up" games. I hope that's not contagious!

Never mind Liverpool beating Lazio in a warm up game. What about Italy beating . . . which team did Italy beat 3 -0 in the first game of the Olympics?

Holland, we all know that, first game of the Euro, 3-0. I don't understand why an Italy fan brings that up.

I heard next year, the Italian teams are planning a schedule to play MLS teams! :-D

Liverpool are prime to get started. 2008 will be the year of the Anfield Boys.

what's the big deal about beating Lazio ?

Lazio is not what it used to be............

TONTO,

remember the time when Lazio had Signori, Fuser, Casiraghi, etc...............coach was Zeman

that Lazio team is still the scariest attacking team i've ever seen...........they ripped the then MIGHTY Milan 4-0 that season after destroying Foggia 8-0........

that was the time when the Italian league hardly produces more than 2 goals per game

that Lazio team would destroy ANY team today.........

Liverpool supporters never give up dreaming about winning the Premiership. You can dream as much as you like.....you will never win it.

What phughes699 said is what I would call "absolute MUPPET". It is something anyone could have said to ManUres 50 years ago

You can't say it now though Timothy know all!

liverpool are not going to win the premier league this year... look at who they bought. Robbie Keane, a good striker but not amazing, David Ngog, dont know much about him, Dossena, deccent player, Degen, decent, Weijl, Cavailierie and Mendy i have never heard of... plus he want Garreth Barry who is a pretty good player but again not amazing. The owners have put the club in a huge financial debt and are not going to give more money for transfers. So the team is pretty good i guess but deffinatly not good enough to win the Premier League. If you know more about those players i would love to hear about them!

I know Ngog and Mendy, and of course the players you mentioned at the beginnin. I think that Liverpool are getting bad players for their standard.

Liverpool are a team of has beens, with no talent whatsoever. The manager switches the team around too much and all they seem to do is live on past glories. They look at Manchester United as a benchmark, but unfortunately never really come anywhere near to them. Their days have gone and they know it, but will not admit that they are just an average team now. As the years go on they will drop lower and lower in the Premiership rankings. Their stadium is out of date, the same as their team and all they have to live on is their dreams of many years ago.

The only british club worth mentioning when it comes to top international trophies. The rest are all 'wanna-be's. Just think that 2 of the so called 'big 4' have never won, not a single time, the CL. So what's so big about them, exept for the hundreds of millions squandered trying to achieve what Nott Forest and Aston Villa did with pennies.

Liverpool have won every trophy at least once in the past 3 seasons except the EPL title. 2008/2009 will end their EPL title drought and once again show the world that Englands top team of all time wear Red and play at Anfield. ManUres, will begin to see the end of their recent form. Six simple words: No Carlos Queiroz = No Powerful United.

DaJohnner, all I can say is “pathetic”. The only major honour Liverpool have won in the PAST 3 SEASONS is the FA Cup. Now if you are seriously thinking that second string victories will provide your first team with major honours then you are more deluded than I ever envisaged!

Yes, Liverpool reserves did win the reserve league last season, well done. Reading won it the previous season, the following season their first team were relegated. Food for thought, eh?

Yes, Liverpool’s youth team did win the FA Youth cup last season, again, well done. Man City won it the season before, say no more!

Liverpool fans scream and shout on how their team are the most successful British team ever, respectfully I can’t argue with that as the stats say it all, but your day has been and gone and you only confirm this by using your youth and reserve team successes as a benchmark. Unfortunately you are boxing in the wrong ring with this one as United are the most successful youth team in English football with the most FA Youth cup titles. The reserve team victories are meaningless, unless you a proud of the fact that your team are the best of a bad bunch!

This seasons predictions are laughable, you have a strong side this year but you still haven’t improved enough the break the United/Chelsea stranglehold!
