Zenit St Petersburg

NOVOSIBIRSK (SW) - Zenit St Petersburg may have started a slow climb back to the top in Russia, but the reigning champions failed to get past a first division side in the national cup.

For their 16th final match on Wednesday, Zenit travelled to Siberia to face Sibir Novosibirsk, currently twelfth in Russia's second flight.

Zenit failed to convince against their inferior opponents, and the first half went by without goals.

And nineteen minutes into the second half, it was striker Aleksey Medvedev to score the only goal of the match.

Current league leaders Rubin Kazan only just managed to survive this round, beating 2nd division side Smena Komsomolsk on penalties after a 1-1 result.

And I can't see Zenit doing anything in Champions League. Honestly, what has happened to the reigning UEFA Cup champions?

A typical 3 day wonder. The team lacks mentality, traditions, depth, you name it. Same as with CSKA Moscow 2 or 3 seasons ago.

I'd not agree with you all. It's difficult to participate in 3 tournaments at once. We are not talking about best teams in the europe. that's what cl is for. And I would say, this game is not important for zenit at the moment. It's more important to be participating in cl(doing it well in the league)...
